Subtitling at Film Festivals in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá specifickými rysy titulkování v prostředí mezinárodních filmových festivalů pořádaných v České republice. Přestože literatury na téma audiovizuálního překladu vyšla v posledním desetiletí celá řada, žádná z prací se problematikou festivalů podrobněji nezabývá. Festivaly jsou většinou zmiňovány pouze stručně v souvislosti s využitím elektronických a vícejazyčných titulků, či jako prostředí, kde se postup titulkování často vymyká běžným normám. Text proto podrobněji zkoumá tyto jevy a snaží se určit i další rysy, které jsou pro daný typ audiovizuálního překladu charakteristické. Studie se detailně zaměřuje na několik vybraných festivalů a zjišťuje, jak různé faktory, jako například obsahové zaměření filmů, jazykové verze titulků, či způsob spolupráce s překladateli, ovlivňují proces překladu a výroby titulků. Jádro této diplomové práce tvoří výpovědi organizátorů festivalů a zástupců překladatelských agentur, které se titulkováním pro festivaly dlouhodobě zabývají. Práce pak uvádí jimi popsané postupy a zkušenosti do souvislostí s poznatky z odborné literatury a snaží se tak podat ucelený obraz o různých postupech uplatňovaných při titulkování festivalových filmů.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the specifics of subtitling in the environment of international film festivals organized in the Czech Republic. Although a lot of literature on audiovisual translation has been published in the past decade, none of the works deals with this topic in detail. Festivals are usually mentioned only briefly in connection with the use of electronic and multilingual subtitles or as an environment where the standard subtitling norms are not so strictly adhered to. The text takes a closer look at these phenomena and attempts to find some additional features characteristic of this kind of audiovisual translation. The study closely observes several selected festivals and investigates how certain factors, such as thematic focus of the films, language versions of subtitles, or the cooperation with translators, affect the processes of translation and production of subtitles. The core of the work is based on the experience of festival organizers and representatives of translation agencies focusing on subtitling for festivals. The thesis puts their observations in the context of specialized literature and presents a comprehensive description of various practices employed in the subtitling of festival films.
