Scottish dialects in the television series Outlander

Abstract:

The main aim of this thesis is to investigate the dialects of Scottish English and their characteristic features in the context of the television series Outlander. The bachelor thesis defines basic terminology such as language, dialect, accent and Standard English. It also deals with the Received Pronunciation, which is then compared with Scottish English. The work also provides an overview of languages and language varieties currently used in Scotland and their brief characteristics. The next chapter describes the early history of English and the process of anglicization. The next section describes regional variations of Scottish English along with their geographic position. The last chapter of the thesis provides basic information about the Outlander as well as the analysis of the certain scenes containing the elements of Scottish English compared to Standard English.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je zkoumání přízvuků skotské angličtiny a jejich charakteristických prvků v kontextu seriálu Cizinka Bakalářská práce definuje základní terminologii jako je jazyk, dialekt, akcent a standartní angličtina. Zabývá se dále standartní výslovností, se kterou je pak skotská angličtina porovnávána. Dále práce uvádí přehled jazyků a jazykových variant užívaných v současné době ve Skotsku a jejich stručnou charakteristiku. Následně je popsána raná historie skotské angličtiny a proces poangličťování. V další části jsou popsány regionální varianty skotské angličtiny spolu s jejich geografickým určením. V poslední části jsou podány informace o seriálu Cizinka a analýza konkrétních scén obsahujících prvky skotské angličtiny v porovnání se standardní angličtinou.
