Picasso’s metalanguage: encyclopedic references.

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská práce si klade za cíl popsat Picassův metajazyk. Citování obrazů prolíná celou tvorbou umělce a činí z jeho uměleckého jazyka metajazyk: estetickými objekty vystupují obrazy malířů, umění samotné i umění autorovo. Dané citování je „encyklopedickou referencí“: tím se rozumí vztah pláten Picassa nikoli k reálnému světu, ale ke světu výtvarného umění prostřednictvím variace, ironie, parodie, aluze atd. Pozdní Picasso se obrátil k interpretaci starých mistrů: Velazquezových Las Meninas, obrazů Goyi, Maneta, Courbeta, Delacroixe. Na základě metody analytické estetiky a filozofie jazyka práce formuje předpoklady o estetické funkci odkazů v malířově tvorbě.

Abstract:

The topic of this bachelor thesis is to describe Picasso’s metalanguage. Citations of paintings have permeated whole oeuvre of the painter and they formed his artistic language into a kind of metalanguage: by this process, paintings of other painters, his own art and art itself become an aesthetic object. Here, this type of citation is called „encyclopedic reference“: it means that Picasso’s images refer not to the actual world, but to art itself as e.g. variations, irony, parody, allusions etc. In his late periods artist appealed to interpretations of old masters: Las Meninas of Velazquez, Goya paintings, Manet, Courbet, Delacroix and citations of his own previous periods. Based on methods of analytic aesthetics and philosophy of language thesis states presuppositions about an aesthetic function of metalanguage references in artist’s works.
