Invisible heroes in the Czech higher education landscape: auto-ethnographic narratives of (non)adaptation and second language learning

Abstract:

Výzkum zkoumá příběhy zahraničních studentů, kteří sdílejí různé adaptační cesty v monokulturním a monolingvistickém prostředí. Cílem výzkumu je hledat narativy, které poukazují na alternativní způsoby adaptace. Hlavní teoretické konstrukty - adaptace, identita, osvojování druhého jazyka - vycházejí z poststrukturalistického přístupu, který nahlíží na tyto koncepty v širším sociálním kontextu. Metodologický přístup výzkumu je narativní auto/etnografie a jako hlavní metodou sběru dat se použije opakovaný interaktivní rozhovor s šesti respondentů z odlišných kultur. Data jsou interpretována pomocí kritické narativní analýzy. Výsledky poukazují na to, že adaptace není vždycky nutná a je ovlivňována vnějšími sociálními diskurzy a vlastní interpretací tohoto fenoménu.

Abstract:

The study explores the narratives of foreign students who share various adaptation journeys and who strive to make sense of their being different in a monocultural and monolingual education context. The research purpose is to scrutinize the counter-narratives of adaptation and show alternative paths in that respect. The main theoretical concepts are situated in the poststructuralist approach which embraces broader social understanding of such concepts as identity, adaptation and second language learning. A specific qualitative methodology – auto/ethnographic narrative approach – is employed to examine the adaptation process in all its forms, and multiple interactive interviews are undertaken with six participants from diverse linguistic and cultural background. Data analysis is achieved through critical narrative analysis and the results are presented in an auto/ethnographic form. One of the main conclusions conveys that adaptation is not always neccessary, being influenced by external social discourses and by one's own concepts of it.
