Facebook in lives of selected journalists: between professional and private self-presentation

Abstract:

Výzkumná bakalářská práce nabízí vhled do toho, jak jedenáct novinářů z brněnských médií konstruuje na online sociální síti Facebook veřejně viditelný obraz sebe sama. Práce se soustředí primárně na otázku, jaké strategie a proč používají tito novináři při odhalování informací na Facebooku a jak v tomto prostředí prezentují profesní a mimoprofesní součásti své identity. Jádrem práce je kvalitativní výzkum založený na analýze polostrukturovaných rozhovorů a na analytickém zohlednění veřejně viditelných údajů v facebookových profilech respondentů. V teoretické části je popsán dramaturgický přístup Ervinga Goffmana, jehož optikou je v dalších částech práce pozorována sebeprezentace respondentů na Facebooku. Dále jsou této části přiblíženy poznatky o konstrukci identity v nonymním online prostředí, sebeprezentaci uživatelů na online sociálních sítích a profesní novinářské identitě. V metodologické části je zdůvodněn kvalitativní přístup a vybraná metoda polostrukturovaných rozhovorů. Analytická část nabízí duální typologii novinářů, podle toho jak aktivně se na Facebooku veřejně sebeprezentují jako novináři. V diskuzi jsou výsledky výzkumu shrnuty a konfrontovány s teorií.

Abstract:

Research bachelor's thesis provides insight into manners of construction of publicly visible self-presentations of eleven journalists from Brno on online social network Facebook. The thesis focuses primarily on indentifying and explaining strategies which these journalists adopt in exposing information on Facebook, the attention is centred also on how journalists present professional and private parts of their identities in this environment. The qualitative research is based on the analysis of semi-structured interviews and analytical exploration of publicly visible data on facebook profiles of selected journalists. The theoretical part describes the dramaturgical approach of Erving Goffman, whose perspective is applied in subsequent parts of the thesis to describe and explain journalist's self-presentation on Facebook. Furthermore, in this section are described theoretical findings about the identity construction in nonymous online environments, user's self-presentation on online social networks and journalist's professional identity. In the methodology section is justified qualitative approach and the selected method of semi-structured interviews. The analytical part offers dual typology of journalists, depending on how actively they self-present themselves on Facebook as journalists. The results of the research are summarized and confronted with theory in the discussion.
