The Problem of the Inflence of African Art on the Works of Pablo Picasso

Abstract:

The main theme of this work is the influence of African primitive art on the works of Pablo Picasso in years 1906–1909. In the first part of this work, the author of the text is trying to briefly introduce the forms and characteristics of African and Iberian art. In the second part, the work is dealing with the question of influence of these arts on Picasso's work. In the part dealing with African influences, there are considered statements of Picasso alone, in the next part it deals with Picasso's relationship to Anticolonialism. Further more, the work introduces the theory of Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, who is expressing his denial of direct influence of African art on cubists, but admits that African tribal masks have had an influence on the birth of Cubistic transparent statue. In the summary part of this chapter the author brings forward a proof of Picasso's interest for primitive objects in the years 1908/1909 and formulates an opinion, that probably there are not only influences of African art, but also of another sources of inspiration. In the following part of this work is this opinion supported by thesis of James Johnson Sweeney, who writes about Picasso's interest for Iberian art. He interprets Iberian influence on actual works of this period. The author of this work is dealing with an example of painting Les Demoiselles d'Avignon to make the question of influences on Picasso's work even more clear in details. She brings forward some other influences on this particular painting. The work is therefore closing with definite deduction that African art is not the only source of inspiration for the Pablo Picasso's works of this period. It is necessary to consider another sources of inspiration, that contributed to creation of works of art mentioned.

Abstract:

Hlavnou témou práce je vplyv afrického primitívneho umenia na tvorbu Pabla Picassa v rokoch 1906–1909. Autorka v úvodnej časti stručne približuje podobu a povahu afrického a iberského umenia. V druhej časti pracuje s otázkou vplyvu týchto umení na Picassovu tvorbu. V časti o africkom vplyve sa zaoberá postupne samotnými vyjadreniami maliara k tejto téme, v ďalšej sa venuje problému Picassovho vzťahu ku antikolonializmu. Ďalej predstavuje teóriu Daniela-Henryho Kahnweilera, ktorý popiera priamy vplyv afrického umenia na kubistov, ale pripúšťa vplyv afrického kmeňového sochárstva na vznik kubistickej transparentnej skulptúry. V zhrnutí tejto kapitoly uvádza dôkaz o Picassovej záľube v primitívnych predmetoch v rokoch 1908/1909 a formuluje názor, že pravdepodobne v jeho tvorbe nenachádzame iba vplyvy afrického umenia, ale aj iných zdrojov inšpirácie. V ďalšej časti práce je tento názor podoprený tvrdeniami Jamesa Johnsona Sweeneyho, ktorý píše o Picassovej záľube v iberskom umení a na konkrétnych dielach tohto obdobia iberský vplyv interpretuje. Aby sa otázka vplyvov na Picassovu tvorbu objasnila ešte podrobnejšie, autorka na príklade obrazu Les Demoiselles d'Avignon uvádza niekoľko ďalších vplyvov na Picassovu tvorbu daného obdobia. Práca tak prichádza ku jednoznačnému záveru, že africké umenie nie je jediným zdrojom inšpirácie Picassovej tvorby tohto obdobia a že je treba brať do úvahy aj ďalšie zdroje inšpirácie, ktoré prispeli ku vzniku spomenutých diel.
