Analysis of the role and successes of the EU in the context of fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je zmapovat problematiku Rozvojových cílů tisíciletí dle postoje Evropské unie a jejích členských států, a navrhnout vhodnější koordinaci rozvojových politik členských států EU. Hypotézami práce jsou tvrzení: „Rozvojová pomoc EU (a jejích členských států) je zaměřena především na oblasti a regiony jejího zájmu podle logiky zájmů jejích členských států,“ a „Užší harmonizace rozvojových politik členských států by vedla k efektivnější rozvojové pomoci, a tedy i k efektivnější podpoře MDGs v EU.“ Text je rozdělen na čtyři části, přičemž první dvě jsou převážně deskriptivní a ve třetí a čtvrté části probíhá vlastní analýza. Teoretické části se věnují MDGs jako takovým, jejich přijetí, obsahu, roli rozvojových a rozvinutých zemí a rozvojové spolupráci EU, jejím principům a postoji členských států. Třetí a čtvrtý úsek představují propojení iniciativy MDGs s rozvojovou spoluprácí EU a analýzu hlavních problematických oblasti při plnění MDGs EU a jejími členskými státy a je prezentován návrh efektivnější harmonizace rozvojové spolupráce EU. V závěru práce dochází k porovnání zjištěných skutečností s obsahem hypotéz.

Abstract:

The aim of bachelor thesis is to describe the Millennium Development Goals in accordance with the position of the European Union and its member states and to suggest more suitable coordination of development policies of the EU member states. The following statements are the hypothesis of this paper: “The development cooperation of the EU (and of its member states) is focused above all on the areas and regions of its interest according to the logic of interests of its member states,” and “Closer harmonization of the member states development policies would lead to more effective development assistance, therefore to the more effective subvention of the MDGs within the EU.” The text itself is divided into four parts, whereas first two sections are based mostly on description and in the third and fourth part the analysis is implemented. The theoretical parts focus on MDGs, the role of developed and developing countries and on the development cooperation of the EU. The third and fourth section represents the interconnection between the EU development cooperation and the MDGs and the analysis of main problematic areas in the context of fulfilling the MDGs by the EU and its member states and a proposal for more effective harmonization of the EU development cooperation is presented. In the conclusion the developed facts and the content of the hypothesis are compared.
