The Dietrichsteins and Spain. Courtiership, Diplomacy and Clientelism in the Aristocratic Career of the Confessional Age.

Abstract:

Práce popisuje vazby rodu Dietrichsteinů na španělskou monarchii v průběhu 16. a 17. století. Dietrichsteinové byli prototypem kariérně orientované aristokracie ve službách habsburských císařů Svaté říše římské. Jejich role napříč několika generacemi rodu byla pevně spojena se zprostředkováním mezi španělským a císařským dvorem. Profil rodinné služby je konstruován na základě prosopografického přístupu, analyzuje španělské vazby a kariérní modely jednotlivých členů rodiny a spojuje je do vícegeneračního principu jejich služby. Jednotlivé prvky španělského spojení rodiny na politickém, diplomatickém a kulturním pozadí jsou analyzovány ze socio-antropologického hlediska. Výsledky výzkumu pak umožňují sestavit obraz rodinných vazeb ke Španělsku v podobě kolektivní biografie několika generací Dietrichsteinů. Velký důraz je kladen také na kontextualizaci jejich činnosti se vzájemnými vztahy obou zmíněných monarchií, a to z pohledu jejich vnitřní i vnější politiky. Za prvé, na úrovni vnitropolitické jsou využívány nedávné výsledky z oblasti výzkumu panovnických dvorů, nabízející širokou analýzu zejména dvora španělských habsburských králů, týkající se frakcionalismu a rodinných a ideologických základů různých dvorských mocenských skupin. Za druhé, na úrovni vnější politiky jsou použity závěry nové diplomatické historie, které přinášejí nové světlo do praxe raně novověké diplomacie.

Abstract:

The work describes the ties of the Dietrichstein family with the Spanish monarchy during the 16th and 17th centuries. The Dietrichsteins were a prototype of a career-oriented aristocracy in service of the Holy Roman Empire rulers from the Habsburg dynasty. Their role during several family generations was firmly linked to the mediation between the Spanish and Imperial courts. The family service profile is constructed based on the prosopographical approach, analysing the Spanish links and career models of the individual family members and uniting them in a multigenerational principle of their service. The individual elements of the family's Spanish connection on the political, diplomatic, and cultural background are analysed from a socio-anthropological perspective. The research results then make it possible to construct an image of family links to Spain in the form of a collective biography of several generations of the Dietrichsteins. A big emphasis is also put on the contextualisation of their activities with the mutual relations between both mentioned monarchies in terms of their internal and external policy. First, on the level of internal policy are exploited the recent investigations from the field of court studies, offering a comprehensive analysis, especially of the court of Spanish Habsburg kings, regarding the factionalism and family and ideological bases of different court power groups. Second, on the level of external policy are used conclusions of the new diplomatic history that brings a new light to the practice of early-modern diplomacy.
