The Conception of Religion, Society and Their Relationship in the Sources about the Czech Peasant’s Rebellion in 1775

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá obraz náboženství, společnosti a obraz jejich vztahu k českému selskému povstání 1775. Na základě analýzy dobových pramenů zjišťuje, jak bylo pohlíženo na příčiny, charakter a účastníky povstání a jak se o náboženství a společnosti autoři pramenů vyjadřovali. V tomto období se hranice mezi společností a náboženstvím velice překrývá, náboženství je vnímáno jako součást sociálních i politických konfliktů. Vyskytují se zápisy, které zdůrazňují náboženskou povahu povstání v podobě vylíčení škod na církevních věcech a ubližování církevním hodnostářům. Takovéto zdůraznění proticírkevních činů povstalců mohlo sloužit jako důvod pro větší odsouzení vzbouřenců veřejností. Objevují se ale také prameny dokazující, že interpretace povstání jako náboženského boje byla potlačována. Tuto represi iniciovala podle pramenů především císařovna Marie Terezie z důvodu strachu z bojů s nábožensky tolerantním Fridrichem II. Vzhledem k analýze povstání v širším politickém kontextu může práce přispět k výzkumům o měnícím se náhledu na vztah náboženství a společnosti v Evropě na konci 18. století.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the view of religion, society and the picture of their relationship towards the Czech peasant’s rebellion 1775. The work asks how the causes, character and participants of rebellion were viewed on the basis of analysis of sources. Secondly it asks how did the authors of the records comment on religion and society of that time. In this period the borders between society and religion overlap significantly and religion is considered a part of social and political conflicts. Records emphasizing religious character of rebellion appear. They describe the damage of church property and harming of church officials. Such emphasis of rebels’ acts against the church could serve as a reason for greater condemnation of rebels by public society. There are sources proving that interpretation of the rebellion as a religious struggle was repressed. According to the sources this repression was iniciated by Maria Theresa because she feared the conflicts with religously tolerant Frederick II. Considering analysis of the rebellion in wider political context, the thesis can contribute to the research of the changing view on religion and society in Europe at the end of the 18th century.
