Characteristics of selected mythological beings of Scandinavian folklore in literature and fine arts

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the topic of folklore and mythology within selected Scandinavian countries and their influence on literature and fine arts. The introduction is devoted to a brief explanation of the terms folklore, myth and folk tale. The main goal of this bachelor thesis is to characterize the troll, giant, fairy and elf from Scandinavian folklore and norse mythology. Subsequently, it analyzes the definition of their position, appearance and differences within selected Norwegian, Swedish and Icelandic national folk stories, sagas and ballads. Single chapter is dedicated to the depiction of these characters in the visual arts within the Scandinavian countries. The conclusion is devoted to the occurrence of examined characters in modern literature and music.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa zaoberá témou ľudového folklóru a mytológie v rámci vybraných škandinávskych krajín a ich vplyvom na literatúru a výtvarné umenie. Úvod práce je venovaný stručnému vysvetleniu pojmov folklór, mýtus a ľudová rozprávka. Hlavným cieľom bakalárskej práce je charakteristika postavy trolla, obra, víly a elfa z prostredia škandinávskeho ľudového folklóru a severskej mytológie. Následne analyzuje vymedzenie ich postavenia, výzoru a rozdielov v rámci vybraných nórskych, švédskych a islandských národných poviedok, ság a ľudových balád. Časť práce je venovaná vyobrazeniu týchto postáv vo výtvarnom umení v rámci škandinávskych krajín. Záver práce je venovaný výskytu skúmaných postáv v modernej literatúre a hudbe.
