Technique and Art: Czech Studio Glass

Abstract:

Práce si klade za cíl přispět alespoň trochu k většímu povědomí o významu skleněné plastiky pro českou výtvarnou scénu. Děje se tak nikoli v uměleckém, nýbrž technologickém kontextu. Zvolenou metodou práce je zpracování přehledu technologických postupů, které umožnily rozvoj skleněné plastiky a malby na sklo takovým způsobem, že původně umělecké řemeslo zbořilo postupně veškeré myslitelné hranice a stalo se navýsost jedinečným výtvarným projevem. Po stručném nastínění historického vývoje předpokladů vzniku specifického odvětví na pomezí výtvarného umění a uměleckého řemesla ateliérového skla, je práce zaměřena na dílo významného českého umělce, akademického malíře Bohumila Eliáše (1937 2005). Jednotlivé technické inovace a technologické postupy, které se ve sklářství objevují a umožňují rozvoj této umělecké disciplíny, jsou popsány a demonstrovány na konkrétních dílech tohoto umělce.

Abstract:

Theme of this theses is Czech studio glass. The main intention of the text is contribute to a greater awareness about its importance for the Czech art scene. It is not from an artistic point of view (as it could be expected), but at the technological context. It brings an abstract of the technologies which made developement of the Czech studio glass possible. It happend in a very specific way, which allowed the glass to brake down every possible border of itself, and let it become a unique artistic material. But such an inimitable transformation could not happen without all the findings and improvements in the science and technological fields. The first part ot the thesis concisely describes the history of the development of Czech studio glass, which lies basically on three main pillars: tradition, education, and invention. The second part concentrates on the work of one of the biggest Czech studio glass artists Bohumil Eliáš (1927 2005). His art work comprises a large spectrum of technological innovations and improvements, which he used in his exceedingly diverse creation.
