Anticheat as a tool for quality improvement of a multiplayer video game

Abstract:

Podvádění ve videohrách je v současné době jeden z největších problémů online kompetitivních her pro více hráčů. Herní vývojáři proti podvodnému chování využívají anticheat – software, který detekuje podvodníky a následně je potrestá. Tím se i do jisté míry jedná o způsob prevence. Tato práce se zabývá dopadem kvality anticheatu na kvalitu celého produktu, ve kterém je integrován. K porozumění dané problematiky byly určeny tři hlavní cíle této práce. Abychom pochopili, co je v kontextu videoher kvalita a jak se jí snaží herní společnosti dosáhnout, prvním cílem je analyzovat současný stav quality assurance a quality control ve vývoji videoher s důrazem na specifika v této oblasti vývoje softwaru. Druhý cíl porozumět problému výběru druhu anticheat softwaru při vývoji a udržování videoher dnes a v minulosti s ohledem na typy podvodů při hraní her a s bezpečností celé aplikace pomůže identifikovat, co je vůbec podvádění ve hrách a jaké jsou možnosti jeho řešení. Poslední cíl analyzovat míru důležitosti kvalitního anticheat softwaru v online kompetitivních first-person shooter (FPS) videohrách na počítač pro dlouhodobý úspěch hry z pohledu hráčů v porovnání s dalšími aspekty zlepšujícími kvalitu celé videohry a analyzovat očekávání hráčů ohledně anticheatu za pomocí dotazníkového šetření mířeného na aktivní hráče tohoto žánru her přiblíží, jak důležité je mít kvalitní anticheat a co od něho očekávají samotní hráči jednoho z nejvíce podvodníky ohrožených žánrů videoher.

Abstract:

Nowadays, cheating in video games is one of the biggest problems in online multiplayer competitive gaming. Game developers react to it by implementing an anticheat to their games – a software used for detecting cheaters and punishing them afterwards. In a way, it can also be considered as a mean of cheat prevention. This thesis deals with the impact of anticheat quality on quality of the whole product in which it is integrated. For better understanding of this problem, three main goals were determined for this thesis. To understand, what quality in the context of video games is and how game companies try to achieve it, the first goal is to analyze status of quality assurance and quality control in game development with an emphasis on specifics in this section of software development. The second goal of this thesis is to understand the problem of choosing a type of anticheat software during development and maintenance of video games today and in the past with respect to types of cheats in games and security of the whole application. It will help us identify, what cheating in games is and what are the solutions to this problem. The last goal is to analyze the degree of importance of quality anticheat in online multiplayer competitive first-person shooter games on computer for long-term success from the perspective of gamers in comparison with other aspects of videogames that boost its quality and analyze the players’ expectation of anticheat functionality with the help of a survey aimed at players of this genre. It will help us understand, how much impact a quality anticheat has on the whole game and what do players of one of the most cheater-endangered genres of video games expect from it.
