Religion and Sexual Selection: Function of Religion in Alloparenting and Paternity

Abstract:

Evoluční vědy posuzují fitness podle reprodukčního úspěchu jedince. Přestože evoluční výzkum náboženství, studující výhody náboženského myšlení a chování zvyšující fitness v určitých kontextech, identifikoval užitečné proxy měřící fitness jako zlepšení zdraví, zisk statusu či prospěch z efektivní skupinové kooperace, dlouho opomíjel reprodukční funkci náboženství. Tuto mezeru ve výzkumu je nutné vyplnit, proto se tato práce věnuje dosavadnímu výzkumu funkce náboženství v oblasti péče o děti. Práce se tak soustředí na jeden z klíčových prvků lidských reprodukčních strategií a konkrétně posuzuje hypotetickou úlohu, kterou náboženství zastává v podpoře alloparentingu a jistoty otcovství. Vzhledem k tomu, že došlo k významnému posunu ve studiu pohlavního výběru, také výzkum lidského reprodukčního rozhodování a chování směřuje od biologického determinismu k zakomponování nejen ekologických faktorů, ale také těch socio-kulturních. Náboženství se tak stává silou, která může formovat reprodukční strategie tak, aby optimalizovala reprodukční úspěch svých členů. Přestože empirických studií o nábožensky podporované péči o děti je zatím nedostatek, otevírají dvě nadějné oblasti. Jednou je funkce, kterou prosociální náboženství, zajišťující vnitroskupinovou důvěru a kooperaci, podporuje matku a její starost o potomky získáním investice do dětí od ostatních členů skupiny. Tu druhou představují nábožensky podporované mate-guardingové praktiky patriarchálních systémů jako menstruační tabu, mutilace ženských genitálií a zahalování, které mohou motivovat otce k investici do potomka prostřednictvím zvýšení jeho jistoty paternity. Bádání by v budoucnu mělo zahrnout jak dlouhodobé studie, tak testování v odlišných socio-ekologických kontextech, které by osvětlily kauzální vztahy a zároveň vývoj rozmanitých forem těchto náboženských konvencí.

Abstract:

Evolutionary sciences quantify fitness in terms of individual reproductive success. Although evolutionary science of religion, which studies fitness benefits of religious beliefs and behaviours in their current contexts, identified proxies such as improved health, status gains, or profits from increased group cooperation, the reproductive function of religion has been neglected. To address this research gap, the thesis reviews previous research on the function of religion in childcare. Concentrating on this fundamental element of human mating strategies, the focus of the review is specifically on the hypothesized role religion plays in supporting alloparenting and paternity certainty. Following the seminal shift in the sexual selection literature, the research of human reproductive decision making and conduct moves not only from biological determinism toward incorporating ecological factors but also toward including socio-cultural factors. Religion, thus, becomes a force which can shape reproductive strategies of its followers in order to optimize their reproductive success. Although empirical explorations of religious childcare are so far scarce, they already open two promising venues. First, where mothers benefit from help of other caretakers when raising their offsprings, prosocial religions, facilitating in-group trust and cooperation, function to promote investments from other group members. Second, religious mate-guarding practices of patriarchal systems such as menstrual taboos, female genital mutilation, and veiling, may function to motivate father’s investment to his offsprings by increasing his paternity certainty. Future research should include both longitudinal studies and testing in different socio-ecological contexts which would shed light on the causal relationships as well as the evolution of the various nuanced shapes of these religious norms.
