Traditional methods of fire protection in the Moravian countryside and innovations until the end of 19th century

Abstract:

Práce pojednává o různých způsobech požární ochrany v tradičním venkovském prostředí, které byly praktikovány na Moravě do konce 19. století. Lidé se snažili požáry předvídat prostřednictvím věštění (z chování zvířat, úkazů na obloze apod.) Způsoby požární prevence i samotného hašení byly determinovány různými příčinami požárů. V případě, že byl domnělým původcem požáru Bůh (např. požár od blesku), lidé nesměli požár hasit, pouze se mohli modlit k Bohu a svatým za odvrácení božího hněvu. Přesto i těmto požárům lidé čelili prostřednictvím různých magických praktik (hašení kravským a kozím mlékem, magické praktiky prováděné šestinedělkou, magie za užití chleba a dalších předmětů, zaříkání, ochranné texty, ochrana pomocí obrazů svatých). Požárům z "Boží vůle" se lidé snažili předcházet dlouho dopředu častějšími religiózními aktivitami i magickými úkony prováděnými jednorázově (např. při stavbě domu), i opakovaně (v rámci výročního obyčejového cyklu). Pokud došlo k požáru z jiných příčin, než byla "vůle Boží" (nehoda, neopatrnost, žhářství, špatný stav topeniště apod.) mohli lidé požár hasit běžným způsobem. Domy zasažené požárem lidé strhávali nebo polévaly vodou. Průběh hasebních prací na venkově a ve městech se lišil. Po požáru si lidé vzájemně pomáhali obnovit svá stavení a zaopatřit se stravou a pící pro dobytek. Požáry poškozovaly i vrchnost, protože venkované nebyli schopni robotovat a platit daně. Proto vrchnost a později i stát vydávali řády, ve kterých lidem nařizovaly, více dbát na požární bezpečnost. Současně stát prosazoval změnu stavebního materiálu venkovských stavení. Komín, stěny a střecha domu ze spalného materiálu (dřevo, sláma) měly být nahrazeny materiálem nespalným (kámen, hlína, cihla). Došlo i k proměnám v intravilánu vesnice. Pro zpomalení ohně byla rozptýlena domovní zástavba, přesunuty rizikové stavby a vysázeny košaté stromy. Na návsi byly vyhloubeny rybníky, postaveny zvoničky a kůlny na nářadí, aby mohli lidé požár rychleji uhasit.Požární bezpečnost na vsi měly zvýšit také pravidelné kontroly technického stavu komínů a později zavedení řemeslníků - kominíků. Přes noc a v době zvýšeného požárního rizika hlídali vesnice ponocní. Zásadní změny v požární ochraně nastaly v průběhu 19. století. Ve 30. letech 19. století bylo zvedeno pojištění, které se rychle rozšířilo do měst i na venkov. Přibližně od 70. let 19. století vznikaly na venkově sbory dobrovolných hasičů, které zcela změnily způsoby dosavadního tradičního hašení požárů, současně se to projevilo v inovaci hasebního nářadí.

Abstract:

The text deals about various methods of fire protection in traditional countryside that were practiced in Moravia until the late 19th century. People tried to anticipate fires through divination (from animal behaviour, phenomena in nature, phenomena in the sky, etc.). Methods of fire prevention and extinguishing were determined by different causes of fires. When the supposed originator was God (e.g. fire from lightning), people were not allowed to extinguish this fire. They could only pray to God or to the saints for averting God’s wrath and disaster. People fought these fires through magical practices (extinguishing with cow and goat milk, magical practices of a woman in childbed, using the magic of bread and other items, spells, magic protective texts, protection through images of saints, etc.). People tried to prevent fires from God's will frequent activities of religious and magic for a long time ahead. Rituals were performed once (during house construction) or repeatedly (during the annual cycle of customary). If there is a fire due to other causes than the "will of God" (accident, carelessness, arson, poor condition of the furnace, etc.) people could extinguish a fire in a conventional manner. People broke down the houses affected by the fire or they poured them with water. The course of fire fighting in the countryside and in the cities was different. After the fire, people helped each other to recover their homes and get food for them and their cattle. Fires caused damage to nobility because the villagers were not able to work and pay taxes. Therefore, nobility and later also states set regulations which people were ordered for more attention to fire safety (e.g. during drying of flax, manipulation with fire in the house and the yard, a ban on tobacco smoking at some places, etc.) in simultaneously, the state promoted the change of using building materials in rural houses. Chimney, roof of the house and walls which were made of flammable material (wood, straw) were supposed to be replaced with fireproof material (stone, clay, bricks). There were also ordered changes in the village square. The residential development was scattered to slow a fire. Some unsafe buildings were moved to safe places and between the houses were planted branching trees (because of catching and stopping flames and dangerous flying embers during a fire). Ponds were dug in the villages, the bell towers and sheds full of tools were built, so people could extinguish the fire quickly. Fire safety in villages was supposed to increase by the regular inspection of technical condition of furnace and chimneys. Later they were taken professional craftsmen - chimney sweeps. There were also watchmen guarding the village at night and in times of an increased fire hazard. Fundamental changes in the fire protection occurred during the 19th century. In the 30s of the 19th century insurances were introduced, which were quickly spread to the towns and to the countryside. Since the 70s of the 19th century the first volunteer fire brigades were established in rural areas. These completely changed the traditional ways of firefighting. Gradually the fire protection was professionalised and fire-fighting tools were modernised.
