Note-taking Methods Supporting Education in Collaborative Virtual Reality

Abstract:

Pokrok technológie virtuálnej reality prináša nové možnosti jej využitia vo vzdelávacích prostrediach. EDive je existujúca aplikácia vyvinutá na Masarykovej univerzite, ktorá sa zameriava na vzdelávanie v kolaboratívnych imerzívnych virtuálnych prostrediach. Učitelia a študenti používajúci EDive pociťovali potrebu robiť si poznámky počas virtuálnych hodín. Cieľom tejto práce je vytvoriť niekoľko metód na robenie poznámok v kolaboratívnej virtuálnej realite. Na základe požiadaviek učiteľov a dizajnérov EDive-u som navrhla a implementovala tri nástroje na vytváranie poznámok. Medzi tieto nástroje patrí 3D pero, samolepiace papieriky a možnosť vytvárať hlasové nahrávky. 3D pero a samolepiace papieriky napomáhajú komunikácii medzi študentmi a učiteľmi. Hlasové nahrávky a samolepiace papieriky umožňujú ukladanie poznámok a ich opätovné zobrazenie po hodine. Okrem toho sú všetky tri nástroje použiteľné na vytváranie osobných poznámok počas hodiny vo virtuálnej realite. Nástroje boli testované s učiteľmi, vývojármi a dizajnérmi EDive-u a celkovo splnili stanovené požiadavky.

Abstract:

The advancement of virtual reality technology brings new possibilities for its use in educational settings. EDive is an existing application developed at Masaryk University that focuses on education in collaborative immersive virtual environments. The teachers and students using EDive reported a need for note-taking during the virtual classes. The goal of this thesis is to create several methods for note-taking in collaborative virtual reality. Based on the requirements posed by both teachers and designers of EDive, I designed and implemented three note-taking tools. The tools include a 3D pen, sticky notes, and the possibility to create voice recordings. The 3D pen and sticky notes aid communication between students and teachers. The voice recordings and sticky notes allow for exporting the notes and revisiting them after the lecture. Furthermore, all three tools can be used for creating personal notes during a class in virtual reality. The tools were tested with the teachers, developers and designers of EDive and, overall, fulfilled the posed requirements.
