Interlingual Code-Switching as a Useful Communicative Strategy

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá konkurenční názory na interlingvální kódové přepínání, přičemž staví do kontrastu starší, obecně negativnější názory s pozitivnějšími názory, které převládají zhruba od 80. let 20. století. Zejména si klade za cíl rozptýlit dříve obecně zažité přesvědčení, že přepínání kódů je příznakem mentální zmatenosti nebo nedostatku jazykové plynulosti tím, že prokáže různé důvody, proč mluvčí užívají tohoto jazykového chování. Ačkoli se teorie ve světě výzkumu značně proměnily, tato práce ukazuje, toto stigma je v populární kultuře stále přítomné, dokonce i mezi bilingvisty. Demonstruje také negativní účinky, které může na mluvčí mít.

Abstract:

This thesis explores competing views on interlingual code-switching, while contrasting older, generally more negative views with more positive views which have been prevalent since around the 1980s. In particular, it aims to dispel the previously commonly-held belief that code-switching is a symptom of mental confusion or of a lack of fluency by demonstrating various reasons for which speakers engage in this behaviour. Moreover, while theories have greatly changed in the world of research, this thesis will demonstrate how a stigma is still present in popular culture, even amongst bilinguals, and the adverse effects this might have on speakers.
