'thyngys turnyng up-so-down': The Grotesque as an Authorial Strategy in The Book of Margery Kempe

Abstract:

Kniha Margery Kempové je náboženské pojednání z přelomu čtrnáctého a patnáctého století napsané ženskou autorkou a je považováno za první autobiografii napsanou v anglickém jazyce. Groteskno prostupuje a formuje Knihu Margery Kempové na všech úrovních textu – od žánru, přes atmosféru, vypravěče, postavy až k vyobrazením. Groteskno a jeho aspekty – karnevalovost, ženská grotesknost a monstrozita – je strategie Kempové k vytvoření prostoru v prominentním diskurzivním systému, který ji obklopuje (tj. středověké společnost a církvi řízené kódy patriarchátu, hierarchie a exkluzivity). Užití groteskna poskytuje Kempové svobodu projevu, přizpůsobuje se jejímu výstřednímu zbožnému projevu a nekonvenčnímu životnímu stylu. Kempová dále obratně analyzuje a přijímá konvence, pravidla a normy dominantního diskurzivního systému a pomocí „thyngys turnyng up-so-down“ (obrácení všeho vzhůru nohama) experimentuje a využívá dominantní diskurz k diskuzi témat, která jako středověká žena považovala za naléhavá a znepokojující.

Abstract:

The Book of Margery Kempe is a devotional treatise written by a woman at the turn of the 15th century and is understood as the first autobiography written in English. The grotesque pervades and shapes the Book on all the levels of the text – from its genre, to its atmosphere, voice, characters and imagery. The concept of the grotesque and its aspects – the carnivalesque, female grotesque and the monstrous – is Kempe’s strategy of creating a room within the prominent discursive system (that is, the medieval society and the church governed by codes of patriarchy, hierarchy and exclusivity), which grants her freedom of expression, accommodates her idiosyncratic devotional expression and unconventional lifestyle. Moreover, the grotesque allows Kempe to analyze and adopt the conventions, rules and norms of the dominant discursive system that surrounds her. By ‘thyngys turnyng up-so-down' both in her life and text, she experiments with, and utilizes, the dominant discourse to address and investigate the topics which she saw as urgent and perturbing in her Book.
