The gender pay gap in the EU and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:

Diplomová práce řeší problémy rozdílného odměňování mužů a žen a vliv pandemie COVID-19 na tuto problematiku. Rozdílné odměňování mužů a žen je v EU stále aktuálním tématem a s příchodem pandemie a jejím nerovnoměrným dopadem na ženy se toto téma opět stalo hojně diskutovaným. Hlavním cílem práce bylo zhodnocení dopadů pandemie COVID-19 na rozdíl v odměňování mužů a žen v EU se zaměřením na Itálii. Dílčím cílem potom bylo zhodnotit dopady této pandemie na pracovní trh EU z hlediska rozdílů mezi pohlavími. Ukázalo se, že pandemie měla v EU negativní dopad zejména na ženy a to z důvodu uzavírání typicky ženských sektorů ekonomiky. Na ženy navíc dopadla zvýšená nutnost péče o děti v době uzavření školských zařízení. Ženy byly také jednou ze skupin, kterým během pandemie významně klesly výdělky. V diplomové práci jsou analyzovány faktory, které přispěly k vývoji mezery v odměňování mužů a žen. Práce také vysvětluje, že ačkoliv indikátor mezery v odměňování mužů a žen během pandemie klesl, nemusí se jednat o reálné zvyšování ženských výdělků. Výsledkem práce je analýza pracovního trhu a výdělků mužů a žen v průběhu pandemie v EU. V poslední kapitole práce je problematika blíže rozebrána na příkladu Itálie.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on gender earnings differences and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The gender pay gap is still a current topic in the EU and became highly discussed once again with the COVID-19 pandemic and its unequal impact on women. The main objective of the thesis was to evaluate the effect of the pandemic on the gender pay gap in the EU with a special focus on Italy. As another objective, the thesis assesses the impact of the pandemic on the EU labour market concerning gender. The pandemic has been shown to harm everybody but especially women due to the closures of sectors typical for women during the pandemic. Women also had to deal with an increased need for childcare after school closures and were one of the groups with the highest decrease in income. This thesis analyses factors that influenced the development of the gender pay gap. It also explains that although the gender pay gap indicator decreased, it doesn't mean that women's income rose respectably to men's. The result of this diploma thesis is the analysis of the labour market and earnings of men and women during the pandemic in the EU. The last chapter discusses the issue in more detail using the example of Italy.
