The importance of the euro in the structure of the foreign exchange reserves

Anotace:

Cílem této práce je popsat a analyzovat význam eura ve struktuře mezinárodních devizových rezerv. Nejprve jsem se zaměřil na charakteristiku devizových rezerv centrálních bank, motivy jejich držby, souvislost se systémy devizového kurzu a platební bilancí. Dále jsem se zabýval problematikou hodnocení adekvátnosti devizových rezerv a jejich optimální měnové struktuře. Protože euro je v mnoha ohledech velmi specifická měna, zahrnul jsem i kapitolu o jeho vzniku, jeho přínosech i nákladech a krizi, kterou si v posledních letech prošlo. Zamyslel jsem se rovněž i nad argumenty příznivců a odpůrců eura a také nad rolí eura jako světové měny. V analytické části jsem na základě dostupných dat hodnotil vývoj mezinárodních devizových rezerv od roku 1999 do současnosti a analyzoval jsem význam eura v jejich struktuře. Tato analýza je dále rozdělena na předkrizový a pokrizový vývoj eura. Závěrem této práce je zhodnocení dosavadního vývoje a predikce očekáváného vývoje v budoucnosti.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to describe and analyse the importance of the euro in the structure of the international foreign reserves. Firstly I focused on characteristic of the foreign exchange reserves, the reason of holding them. The link between the foreign exchange reserves and the foreign exchange rate regime as well as the balance of payments is also mentioned. Further I considered the issues of assessing reserve adequacy. As the euro is a specific currency in many aspects, I also considered its history and its latest crisis. To sum up the theoretical part I included a chapter engaging in various opinions of leading Czech economist about the euro as well as the concept of the world currency. In the analytical part of this thesis I analysed the evolution of the international foreign exchange reserves from the 1999 and I analysed the importance of the euro in its structure. In order to comprehensibly describe this progress I divided it into pre-crises and post-crises era. The conclusion of this thesis is comprised of the assessment of the described evolution and the prediction of future.
