Economic Determinants of Gender Employment Gap in Egypt

Abstract:

V současné době panují celosvětové obavy z absence rovnocenné účasti žen na trhu práce a z toho, jak velký je rozdíl mezi jejich mužskými vrstevníky v různých odvětvích ekonomiky, když se podíváme do Egypta, zdá se, že je tento rozdíl velmi široký bez ohledu na ekonomické reformy a v zemi byl nedávno proveden vývoj. Egypt je vysoce zalidněná země s více než 100 miliony obyvatel. Země provádí mnoho sociálních reforem s cílem zlepšit kvalitu života svých obyvatel, ale kulturní přesvědčení a normy hrají důležitou roli v tom, že působí jako hlavní faktor snížení počtu účastnic na trhu práce. Tento dokument zdůrazňuje rozdíl mezi ženami a muži na trhu práce v Egyptě pomocí deskriptivní analýzy údajů, které nedávno zveřejnila státní agentura pro statistické publikace, zjištění ukázaly, že po dobu 3 let studie byly ženy daleko za muži v hlavních hospodářských odvětvích. Studie konečně uvádí, že maximální počet žen, které mají být zaměstnány, je 20% ročně, zatímco muži jsou zaměstnáni s 80%, což ukazuje, jak závažná je mezera v Egyptě a že trh práce není příliš účinný na to, aby přijal velká roční čísla absolventů

Abstract:

Nowadays there is a global concern about the absence of equal women participation in the labour market and how is wide the gap with their male peers in different sectors inside the economy, by looking to Egypt, the gap seems to be very wide regardless the economic development and reforms been done to the country, due to cultural beliefs and norms that played effective role in reflecting the low women participation in the labour force. For instance, the fact that a woman may become a mother causes potential employers to feel insecure due to her possible long absence from work, which results in a negative impact on a woman's professional career. Women play many more roles in life than men, which is why they face more issues with the development of a professional career. Another crucial factor which prevents women from pursuing career is that many vacancies tend to be designed in such a way that they are only suitable for men, not for women and, thus, legalize the discrimination. This paper highlights the gap between women and men inside the labour market inside Egypt using a descriptive analysis of the figures that was recently published by the state agency for statistical publications, the findings showed that for the 3 years under the study, women were way behind men in the major economic sectors. Finally, the study presented that the maximum number for women to be employed is 20% per year while men get employed with 80%, which shows how severe is the gap in Egypt and that the labour market is not very efficient to accept big annual numbers of graduates
