Measuring Properties of Metric Dataset Representations

Abstract:

Študujeme a porovnávame metrický obal a guľu, techniky používané na reprezentáciu metrických regiónov. Vytvárame viacero experimentov na porozumenie silných stránok ale aj nedostatkov týchto reprezentácií. Rôzne aspekty posudzujeme aj pomocou rozmanitých syntetických a reálnych dát. Výsledky ukazujú, že veľkosť metrického obalu zostáva konštantná so zvyšujúcou sa dimenzionalitou dát a že malé obaly môžu fungovať konkurencieschopne voči guli. Navyše, zväčšenie veľkosti obalu zlepšuje kompaktnosť a znižuje pokrytie externých objektov. Nie je však známe, ako nájsť rovnováhu medzi efektivitou a kompaktnosťou reprezentácie. Na tento účel vytvárame novú mieru lokálnej hustoty, pomocou ktorej je možné vyhodnotiť kvalitu jednotlivých reprezentantov obalu.

Abstract:

We study and compare a metric hull and ball, techniques for representing metric regions. Multiple experiments are created to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the representations. We assess different aspects also by using various synthetic and real-life data sets. The results demonstrate that the hull size remains constant with increasing dimensionality of the data, and small-sized hulls can perform competitively with the ball representation. Moreover, increasing the hull size improves compactness and reduces external object coverage. However, it is unknown how to find the balance between efficiency and compactness of the representation. For this purpose, we create a new measure of local density, which can be used to evaluate the quality of individual hull representatives.
