Identity of Vietnamese adolescents in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá utvářením identity 2. generace vietnamských adolescentů žijících v České republice. Teoretická část shrnuje základní informace o Vietnamu, následně se věnuje konceptům identity a charakterizuje vývojové období adolescence. Pro účely tohoto výzkumu byly ve výzkumné části provedeny semistandardizované narativní rozhovory se šesti vietnamskými adolescenty ve věku 17–22 let, kteří v ČR vyrůstali. Přepisy rozhovorů byly analyzovány narativně a zpracovány pomocí kódování. Vietnamští adolescenti jsou odmalička vystavováni dvěma odlišným kulturám, tradičním vietnamským hodnotám ve formě rodiny a širší komunity a české společnosti skrze vzdělávací systém a vrstevníky. Od dospívajících je požadováno zachování původních tradic, ale i úspěšná integrace do majoritní společnosti. Základní životní hodnoty, jako je výběr přátel či partnerů, vztah s rodiči nebo k Vietnamu, se utvářejí v souvislosti se sociálním kontextem, ve kterém jedinec vyrůstá.

Abstract:

This study is focused on the development of identity of second generation Vietnamese adolescents living in the Czech Republic. The theory sums up the basic information about Vietnam and then defines the concepts of identity and adolescence. For the purposes of this research, semi-structured narrative interviews were conducted with six Vietnamese adolescents at the age of 17-22 who grew up in the Czech Republic. The transcripts of the interviews were analyzed using a narrative approach and processed with coding. Since childhood, Vietnamese adolescents are facing two opposing cultures. Traditional Vietnamese values via family and wider community and Czech society via school system and peers. Adolescents are expected to preserve Vietnamese traditions but also to fully integrate into the host culture. Fundamental life values, such as choosing friends and companions or the relationship with parents or to Vietnam are formed according to the social environment in which the individual grows up.
