The Conception of Witchcraft and Its Persecution According to Norman Cohn and Margaret Murray: A Metahistory

Abstract:

Cílem této práce byl podrobný rozbor dvou různých pojetí čarodějnictví a jeho persekuce, představených v dílech The Witch-cult in Western Europe (1921) a The God of the Witches (1933) od Margaret Murrayové a Europe’s Inner Demons (1975) Normana Cohna. K rozboru jsem využila metahistorický přístup, představený a vůbec poprvé využitý Haydenem Whitem (1973). Tento přístup umožnil pojímání těchto děl jako příběhů, analýzu jejich klíčových prvků nástroji sloužícími obvykle spíše k analýze fikčních příběhů a následnou komparaci. Cílem rozboru byla rekonstrukce způsobu, jakým Norman Cohn a Margaret Murraová konfigurují své zápletky a porozumění důvodům přesvědčivosti jejich příběhů čarodějnictví v akademickém i neakademickém prostředí na úrovni jejich narativní výstavby. Kromě toho jsem se také pokusila stručně nastínit posun v teoriích a argumentaci u Margaret Murrayové v rámci jejích dvou výše zmíněných děl, která vyšla s více než desetiletým odstupem. Ač se rozebírané teorie zdají na první pohled diametrálně odlišné, ve skutečnosti jsem zde nalezla mnoho společných prvků, například koncept strachu z určité skupiny, kritiku záznamů z procesů jakožto relevantních zdrojů, postavu církevních autorit v pozici pronásledovatelů a podobně. Důvody přesvědčivosti rozebíraných teorií dle mého názoru spočívají převážně v ideologické implikaci autorů a jimi zvoleném modu konfigurace zápletky. Cohn představuje tragický příběh nevinných lidí, popravovaných na základě nekriticky přejatých představ církevních a světských autorit. Příběh Murrayové je romantický, jsou zde stíháni potomci původního pohanského kultu na základě mylného interpretování prastarých zvyků a rituálů církevními autoritami.

Abstract:

The purpose of this work was a detailed analysis of two different conceptions of witchcraft and its persecution, presented in the works The Witch-cult in Western Europe (1933) and The God of the Witches (1933) by Margaret Murray and Europe's Inner Demons (1975) by Norman Cohn. I used the metahistorical approach for my analysis, this approach was first presented and used by Hayden White (1973). This approach enabled the conception of these works as stories, analysis of their key features by tools usually used for fictional stories and comparison. The aim of this analysis was to reconstruct the way in which Norman Cohn and Margaret Murray configured their stories and to understand the reasons for the persuasiveness of their stories of witchcraft in the academic and non-academic background on the level of their narrative construction. In addition, i have tried to briefly outline the shift in the theories and arguments of Margaret Murray in her aforementioned works which were published with more than a decade between them. Although the discussed theories seem diametrically opposite at the first glance, I have found, that they have many elements in common, such as the concept of fear of certain groups, the critique of records from the processes as relevant sources, the character of ecclesiastical authorities in the position of persecutors and so on. Reasons for the persuasiveness of the analyzed theories in my opinion lay mainly in the ideological implications of the authors and in the mode in which they configured their storie Cohn presents a tragical story of innocent people, executed based on uncritically adopted ideas of religious and secular authoritie Murray's is a romantic story, in which the descendants of the original pagan cult are persecuted by religious authorities on the base of falsely interpreted ancient traditions and ritual
