Political tendencies in Art

Abstract:

Co je politické umění a kde jsou jeho hranice? Interpretace pojmu politického umění je v současné době velmi diskutovaným tématem. Práce shrnuje prozatímní teoretické podklady, pokouší se ohraničit pojem politické umění, vyvozuje jeho vlastnosti z historických poznatků. Umění jako zásadní prvek kultury je s politikou jednoznačně spjat. Navzájem se ovlivňují a využívají své moci a vlastností k poukázání na společenské jevy, které jsou často důležitým historickým posunem. Prvním zásadním krokem k politickému způsobu nahlížení na umění byla změna pozice umělce na kult osobnosti, provázané burčiskými a anarchistickými tendencemi vůči společnosti. Následné dramatické události 1. poloviny 20. století ovlivněné nejistotou a válečným marasmem poznamenaly komunikaci mezi umělcem a společností tak, že vliv politiky byl jedním z hlavních témat. Umělci se distancovali od společenského života a ujali se role tichých vyčkávajících partyzánů, kteří vědí, kdy je vhodná doba k útoku. Bohužel svůj boj o vliv umění na politiku prohráli, a zvítězila nad nimi moc, která ovlivnila českého člověka natolik, že jeho důsledky jsou viditelné dodnes. Diference pole oficiální a neoficiální kultury vytvořilo na dlouhou dobu hranici, jejíž překročení na opačný břeh bylo nenávratné. Právě politika je 68 onou pomyslnou hraniční linií. Proto se politické umění pohybuje vždy na hraně. Používá kontroverzních uměleckých prostředků k upoutání pozornosti na aktuální problém, mnohdy svázaný se společenským faux-pas. Vyzdvihuje nešvary politického systému a často poukazuje na lidskou hloupost a nevšímavost. Volí prostředky, které mají ironický, mystifikační a nihilistický ráz proto, aby akce vůči společenským konvencím měla co nejdůslednější efekt. Porevoluční období se stalo na dlouhou dobu nezájmem o tento druh aktivismu, společnost byla unavena komunistickým režimem a jeho nucenými idejemi a povinnostmi vůči kultuře. Naopak poslední desetiletí zaznamenává nárust angažovaných akcí vůči společnosti, odůvodněný rozbitím naivních představ o demokratickém státu. V porovnání se světovými dějinami je český umělecký aktivismus stále v plenkách, avšak jeho tendence narůstají s nejistotou, kterou nám současná politická situace přináší.

Abstract:

What is political art and where are its boundaries? Interpretation of the concept of political art is currently very hot topic, the thesis summarizes provisional theoretical bases, follows their interpretation and attempts to define the concept of political art by pointing to its history and then the drawing its properties. They affect each other and use their power and features to highlight the social phenomena that often play a role of important historical shifts. The first major step towards regarding art in a political way was turning an artistic status into the cult of personality, linked by rebelious and anarchistic tendencies towards society. Subsequent historical events of the first half of the 20th century affected by the the feelings of insecurity caused by war ruled the communication between artists and society so that the power of politics was one of the main themes. Artists dissociated themselves from social life and took the role of silent waiting guerrillas, who knew when it was the right time for the attack. Unfortunately, their struggle for influence on the art of politics, which 71 was mostly presented by manifests was lost to the power that affected Czech people so much that the consequences of defeat are still visible. Difference in field of official and unofficial culture has become a limit for a long time, of which the crossing and reaching the other side was irretrievable. It is just the politics forming that imaginary boundary and that’s why the political art always balances on the edge. It uses controversial artistic means to draw attention to the actual problem, often tied to the social faux-pas, points out the vice and flaws of the political system, and often refers to human stupidity and inattention. Also, it often chooses means that are of ironic mystifying and nihilistic character so that the action against the social conventions has the most consistent effect possible. In the post- revolutionary period there was a long-time lack of interest in this kind of activism, society was tired of the communist regime and its forced ideas and responsibilities towards the culture as a whole. The last decade however marks an enormous increase in the actions committed against society resulting from breaking those naive fantasies of a democratic state. In comparison with world history, the Czech artistic activism is still in its infancy, but it tends to increase with uncertainty caused by our current political situation.
