Art and Antiques Auctions in the First Republic in Prague

Abstract:

Předložená práce je věnována fenoménu aukcí výtvarného umění a starožitností v Praze v letech první československé republiky. Pozornost je též zaměřena na historický a sociální kontext, v němž se dražby odehrávaly. Ostatním formám obchodu s uměleckými díly je věnována kapitola o primárním trhu, kde jsou zmíněny obchodní činnosti uměleckých spolků a působení jednotlivých soukromých galerií. Historie pravidelných moderních aukcí je sledována od jejich počátků v roce 1912 spojených s činností tajemníka Krasoumné jednoty Rudolfa Weinerta. V poválečných letech se tento způsob podnikání dále rozvíjel a postupně vznikaly další podniky, jako byla Aukční síň Státního zástavního úřadu, Aukční síň Zdeňka Jeřábka, firmy Stanislava Budila a Marie Goldbergové-Schlosserové, nebo luxusní aukční domy Jindřicha Slatnera, Moritze Müllera či salon konsorcia starožitníků Maison antique. V časech světové hospodářské krize některé dosavadní podniky zanikly, aby uvolnily místo obchodníkům Václavu Hořejšovi a Karlu Struskovi, které ve druhé polovině třicátých let doplnil Rudolf Weinert s aukčním oddělením Rubešovy galerie. Vznik československé republiky byl doprovázen mnohými revolučními změnami v tehdejší společnosti. V souvislosti s pozemkovou reformou a nostrifikací průmyslových a obchodních podniků došlo k velkým přesunům historického majetku kupovaného v aukcích příslušníky nových ekonomických elit. Některé dražební katalogy z těchto let jsou jedinými doklady o mobiliářích historických šlechtických sídel prodávaných v souvislosti s rozdělováním velkostatkářské půdy. Jiným fenoménem doby se stalo drobné sběratelství živené některými aukčními domy demokratizujícímu tuto zálibu určenou v předchozích letech pouze příslušníkům vyšší společnosti. Zbožím převažujícím v pražských dražbách byly drobné dekorativní předměty z historického porcelánu a skla doplněné nábytkem a koberci z bývalých šlechtických sídel. Malířská díla sice v licitacích dosahovala vysokých finančních částek, nebyla však zdaleka tolik vyhledávána jako starožitnosti. Nejfrekventovanější byla díla nizozemské produkce 17. století a česká malba 19. století doplněná dalšími pracemi tohoto období ze širšího středoevropského prostředí. V rámci dobového evropského kontextu nebyl český aukční trh příliš významný. Z pohledu současného badatele jsou však historické stopy zanechané dražbami jen těžko vyčerpatelnou studnicí informací z let jejich pořádání, stejně jako z dob předcházejících, v nichž se odehrávaly osudy nabízených děl i jejich majitelů. Dalším okruhem poznatků jsou informace ilustrující sběratelské prostředí, vnímavost a hodnotovou orientaci té části kulturní scény první republiky, která doposud stála spíše v pozadí zájmu, zastíněná fascinací projevy dobové moderny a avantgardy. Je to právě prostředí obchodu s díly starých mistrů a starožitnostmi, které nám umožňuje nahlédnout estetiku sdílenou převážnou většinou tehdejší společnosti. Zájem o vše staré včetně umění je reakcí na zvýšené tempo doby. Prudké sociokulturní změny oddělují to, co jsme od toho, co jsme byli. Oceňování a vyhledávání předmětů z minulosti tedy může být pochopeno jako manifestace touhy po ztracené jednotě.

Abstract:

This thesis tackles the phenomenon of art and antiques auctions in Prague during the so-called first Czechoslovakian republic. Furthermore, it focuses on the historical and social context of these auctions. Other forms of art trade are dealt with in a chapter on the primary market, together with the activities of art associations and the workings of individual private galleries. The thesis follows the history of modern auctions since their beginnings in 1912, which were connected with the activities of Rudolf Weinert, the secretary of Krasoumná jednota. In the post-war years, this type of business had flourished further and new enterprises, such as Auction House Státní zástavní úřad, Zdeňek Jeřábek’s Auction House, the enterprises of Stanislav Budil and Marie Goldbergová-Schlosserová; or the luxurious Jundřich Slatner’s or Moritz Müller’s auction houses; or Maison antique, the salon of the consortium of antiquarians came into being. During the times of the world economic crisis, some of the enterprises ceased to exist, only to allow more space for Václav Hořejš and Karel Struska, enterpreneurs, and in the second half of the thirties Rudolf Wienert and his auction department of Rubeš’s gallery. The creation of Czechoslovakia was followed by numerous revolutionary changes in the contemporary society. In connection with the land reform and nostrification of industry, historical property was being sold and bought in a large scale in auctions, especially by the new economic elites. Some of the auction catalogues from these years represent the only proof of what the furnishing of some of the historical residences of nobility – sold in connection with the division of larger properties – looked like. Smaller collectors have become another phenomenon of that era. Their interests were sustained by some of the auction houses, democratizing this, originally upper class, activity. Smaller decorative, porcelain and glass objects, together with furniture and carpets from the former nobility residences were the prevailing merchandise in Prague auctions. Although the paintings were sold for high prices, their sales were not as frequent. The most frequent were the 17th century Dutch paintings and 19th century Czech paintings, together with other works from this era that came from a wider Central-European environment. The Czech auction market has not been very significant within European context at that time. From the point of view of an early 21st century historian, the historic traces of auctions are a great source of information of that particular era, as well as from the years past, the years of the lives of the auctioned works and their owners. The information illustrating the collectors’ environment, their sensitivity and value-orientation of that part of the so-called First Republic’s cultural circles that has been rather overlooked, shaded by the fascination of modern art and avant-garde, represent another area of findings of this thesis. The environment of trading the works of old masters and antiquities allows us to perceive the aesthetics of the society at that time. The focus on and interest in all things old is a reaction to the hectic speed of that era. Sudden socio-cultural changes separate that what we are now from the way we were. Evaluating and searching for objects from the past may be understood as a manifestation of the longing for lost unity.
