The relevance of financial statements for capital markets: a qualitative analysis

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou relevance účetních závěrek pro kapitálové trhy. Úkolem je zjistit, zda jsou účetní závěrky relevantní a využitelné pro rozhodování investorů. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí. V teoretické části jsou vymezeny funkce účetnictví a možnosti a omezení využití účetních závěrek pro investorská rozhodnutí a dále uživatelé, cíl a obsah účetní závěrky. Na základě rešerše literatury jsou následně odvozeny hypotézy. V praktické části je poté provedeno hodnocení kvality vykazovaných informací společností indexu Stoxx Europe 600 z odvětví průmyslového zboží a služeb v účetních závěrkách a celých výročních zprávách pomocí scoringového modelu. Nakonec je zkoumán vliv kvality vykazovaných informací na ukazatele tržní hodnoty.

Abstract:

This master's thesis deals with the issue of annual reports` value relevance for capital markets. The goal is to determine whether financial statements are relevant and usable for investors' decisions. The thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical part defines accounting functions as well as possibilities and limitations of the use of financial statements for investment decisions. Subsequently it defines users of financial statements, financial statements` aim and content. Based on the literature review, hypotheses are derived. In the practical part, the quality of reported information of industrial goods and services`companies of the Stoxx Europe 600 index in financial statements and whole annual reports is evaluated using a scoring model. Finally, the influence of the quality of the reported information on market value indicators is examined.
