Paths of private modern art collecting in the Czech lands between 1948 and 1965

Abstract:

Práce se věnuje fenoménu soukromého uměleckého sběratelství na našem území v období od komunistického převratu v roce 1948 do poloviny šestého desetiletí. Obraz principielně nové situace a role soukromého uměleckého sběratelství, okolností a cest jeho vývoje v komplikovaných podmínkách poválečné totalitní společnosti, za specifické situace státem usměrňovaného uměleckého provozu a trhu, je autorkou sestavován na základě fragmentárních pramenů veřejných archivních fondů, souvisejících výstupů dobových periodik, stávajících dílčích studií, výstavních a aukčních katalogů, memoárové literatury, beletrie. Jednotlivé kapitoly sledují cílená systémová opatření proti tzv. bývalým lidem a jiným zástupcům „poražených“ tříd, jež dosud představovaly nositele tohoto fenoménu. Analyzují vývoj oficiální rétoriky režimu v této oblasti, podmínky a okolnosti fungování uměleckého trhu. Modelově je sledována situace individuálních sběratelů moderního umění, převážně majitelů významných předválečných sbírek, jejich rozdílné profesně – společenské postavení a aplikované adaptační strategie. Prostor je věnován výjimečnému postavení sbírky Vincence Kramáře (1877 – 1960) a dalším výrazným osobnostem, otázce případné geneze sběratelů z řad nových společenských elit. Okolnosti vývoje soukromého sběratelství jsou stavěny do souvislosti se situací veřejných sbírkových institucí. Systematicky je, i na základě zcela nově odkrytých archivních pramenů, sledována otázka výrazných sbírkových pohybů, ústících, ať už cestami „legislativního násilí“ či spontánně do fondů pražské Národní galerie. Výslednicí této sbírkové mobility přelomu pátého a šestého desetiletí byly zcela nové expoziční a výstavní výstupy, věnované zde po roce 1962 modernímu umění. Uskutečněné sbírkové odkazy a jejich reflexe současně znamenaly významný krok k oficiální společenské rehabilitaci sledovaného fenoménu. Otevřely cestu směřující ke genezi nové sběratelské generace, jež se přihlásila ke slovu ve druhé polovině šedesátých let.

Abstract:

The presented work is devoted to the phenomenon of private art collecting in the Czech lands in the period from the 1948 Communist coup d'état until the mid-1960s. The author has assembled a picture of the fundamentally new situation and role in which private art collecting found itself, the circumstances and paths of its development in the complicated conditions of post-war totalitarian society, and the particular situation of state-directed artistic practice, including the art market. This picture is developed on the basis of fragmentary sources from public archival collections, related outputs from contemporaneous periodicals, existing component studies, as well as exhibition and auction catalogues, memoirs and fiction. The individual chapters trace targeted, systemic actions taken against so-called “former people” and other representatives of the “defeated” social classes who had hitherto been the vehicles of this phenomenon. They analyse the development of the regime’s official rhetoric in this area, and the conditions and circumstances in which the art market functioned. The situations of individual modern art collectors – mainly owners of significant pre-war collections – are modelled, including their professional and social positions, and the adaptive strategies they utilised. Space is also devoted to the exceptional position of the collection of Vincenc Kramář (1877 – 1960) and to other prominent figures, as well as to the question of the possible emergence of collectors from among the ranks of the new social elites. The circumstances of the development of private collecting are set into context with the situation of institutions administering public collections. The issue of significant collection acquisitions by the National Gallery in Prague, whether through “legislative coercion” or spontaneously, is explored systematically, making use of newly uncovered archival sources. This mobility of collections in the late 1950s and early 1960s gave rise to completely new exposition and exhibition outputs devoted to modern art in Czechoslovakia after 1962. The realised collection references and their reflections also signified an important step towards the official social rehabilitation of private art collecting, thereby opening a path leading to the genesis of a new generation of collectors who came on the scene in the second half of the 1960s.
