The link between parenting styles and the perceived purpose of play, and their relationship to the choice of a toy

Abstract:

Hra je pro děti, především ty předškolní, přirozenou součástí života, a často také hlavní náplní času. Prostřednictvím hry mohou děti odpočívat nebo vybít přebytečnou energii, mohou se odreagovat od událostí reálného světa nebo je na nevědomé úrovni zpracovat. Prostřednictvím hry se mohou děti také rozvíjet v různých oblastech od kognitivní a pohybové po osobnostní a sociální. Důležitým faktorem, který hru dítěte ovlivňuje mnoha způsoby, jsou rodiče. Rodiče svým působením mohou hru buď podporovat, nebo naopak omezovat. Hru dítěte mohou ovlivňovat už při výběru hraček, které dětem ke hře dají k dispozici. Tato práce se věnuje vztahům rodičovských výchovných stylů s vnímaným smyslem hry a výběrem hračky, a má za cíl tyto vztahy prozkoumat, aby přispěla k objasnění vlivů vedoucích k působení na dětskou hru rodiči. Od 136 rodičů, jejichž děti mají v následujícím školním roce nastoupit do školy, byla sesbírána dotazníková data, na kterých byly pomocí faktorové analýzy a lineární regrese následně testovány stanovené hypotézy. Bylo zjištěno několik různých souvislostí především mezi rodičovskými výchovnými styly a vnímaným smyslem hry, ale také mezi péčí rodičů a jejich výběrem hračky. Tyto poznatky mohou přispět k lepšímu pochopení vlivů rodičů na děti a jejich vývoj a mohou být také podkladem pro cílenější informování rodičů o vhodnosti a potenciálu dětské hry.

Abstract:

Play is a very natural part of children’s life. Children spend most of the time playing. They can rest or release energy through play, forget about real world events or deal with them unconsciously. Children can also develop through play in many different fields from cognitive and physical to personal and social. Parents are the important factor that can affect play in many ways. It is their choice, if they support play or not. Further, they influence play by the choices they make about toys they offer to their children. This thesis examines links between parenting styles, perceived purpose of play, and the choice of a toy. Its goal is to explore these links and to contribute to an understanding of influence that parents have on the play of their children. Data were collected via questionnaires from 136 parents of preschool children and consequently used for testing theoretically grounded hypotheses by factor analysis and linear regression. The thesis identified several associations between parenting styles and perceived purpose of play, but also between nurturance and choice of a toy. These findings can contribute to a better understanding of the influence that parents have on their children’s development and can be also used to a more accurate informing of parents about the benefits of the child’s play.
