Differences Between Czech and English Pronunciations of Latin

Abstract:

Angličtina a čeština jsou jazyky s naprosto odlišnými vývojovými liniemi a rozdílnými fonetickými systémy. Zatímco se čeština vyvinula z jednotné praslovanštiny, angličtina měla svůj vývoj ovlivněn mnoha dalšími jazyky – jako například germánskými jazyky, anglosaštinou, latinou a dalšími. Latina však působila na vývoj anglického jazyka nejintenzivněji, jelikož ji ovlivnila dokonce v několika stádiích, jako například při římském osídlení či středověkém obracení ke křesťanství. Oba jazyky jsou spojeny s latinou po několik století, a proto tahle práce analyzuje anglickou a českou výslovnost latiny. Primárním cílem této analýzy je současná výslovnost latiny vybranými mluvčími a porovnání výslovnostních rozdílů, jelikož mluvčí angličtiny užívají tzv. restituované výslovnosti a čeští mluvčí výslovnosti středověké. Širší zaměření analýzy spočívá v porovnání odlišností od předepsaných pravidel z vybraných učebnic latinského jazyka vybraných autorem této bakalářské práce. Jak čeština, tak angličtina, jelikož oba jazyky pocházejí z odlišné lingvistické větve, disponují rozdílnými fonetickými systémy. Kupříkladu, angličtina užívá diftongizaci na většinu samohlásek, zatímco čeština se řídí doslovnou, takzvanou ad litteras, výslovností. Od těchto a dalších odlišností se očekává, že ovlivní výslovnost čteného latinského textu. Tato bakalářská práce stručně představuje vývoj dvou dále analyzovaných jazyků a ukazuje jejich spojitost s jazykem latinským. Druhá kapitola práce porovnává fonetické systémy analyzovaných jazyků a poukazuje na jejich největší rozdílnosti, jako například na konkávní a konvexní polohu jazyka při tvoření hlásek. Třetí kapitola prakticky analyzuje sedm nahrávek, tři namluvené anglickými mluvčími a čtyři českými. Na základě této analýzy autor bakalářské práce potvrzuje tezi, že angličtí mluvčí uplatňují pravidla fonetického systému svého mateřského jazyka. Největší rozdíly byly patrné při dvojhláskách a vyslovování alveolární vibranty /r/. Čeští mluvčí, dodržují předepsaná pravidla přesněji, jelikož středověká výslovnost je velmi podobná českému fonetickému systému.

Abstract:

English and Czech are two languages with completely different evolutions and phonetic systems. English underwent its evolution influenced by several languages, such as Germanic, Anglo-Saxon, Old Scandinavian and Latin, whereas Czech has evolved from the Proto-Slavic language. Latin has a major impact on the English language evolution, since it influenced English during Roman settlement and then during Medieval Christianisation. Both of the languages have long experience with Latin and therefore, this thesis analyses the pronunciation of Latin texts by English and Czech native speakers. The main aim of the thesis is the analysis of current pronunciations of Latin and the comparison of the differences, since English native speakers use Restored pronunciation and Czech speakers use Medieval one; further research aims on the extent of deviations from the rules prescribed in two Latin handbooks chosen by the author of the thesis. Both English and Czech, since each of them originates from different linguistic branch, have different phonetic systems. For instance, the English language applies diphthongisation on most of the vowels, whereas Czech pronunciation system is ad litteras. These differences are expected to modify the pronunciation of the prepared Latin text adapted for the purpose of the present study. The thesis briefly introduces the evolution of the two languages and links the histories of the languages with their connection to Latin. The second chapter compares the two phonetic systems and gives the examples of their major differences, such as convex or concave positions of the tongue. The third chapter of the thesis analyses seven recordings of three English and four Czech native speakers. Based on the analyses, the author of the thesis confirms that English native speakers apply phonetic rules of their native language. The major differences occur in pronouncing diphthongs and alveolar trill. The Czech native speakers follow their respective rules, since the type of pronunciation is almost identical to the phonetic system of their native language.
