To Whom Do the Children Belong ? The Control of Childhood and Its Development in the 19th and 20th Century.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to present changes concerning the perception of childhood control from the perspective of family, community and state in modernity as well as to outline their development in post-modernity. Theoretical part focuses on both traditional concept of childhood and the new paradigm while these influenced by social control. In analytical part author analyses texts of foreign theoreticians regarding their attitude, description, conceptualization of given question as well as their approach to the imbalance of controls. Moreover, whether and to what extent the family primarily served as control element of children and what was the development of its position regarding socio-economic changes in modernity, are the other aims of the thesis. The entire content of the thesis specializes on control balance development in western European countries especially in the United Kingdom. In general, the attitude of strong position of family at the beginning of 19th century mostly prevails among theoreticians. However, this position is diminished and it defers to societal interests of the state. The period of 20th century is characterized by low parental control and by the development of the state control in all spheres of children`s and family life. The increase of state superiority over parental control is conditioned by liberalization of children`s rights and their enforcement in society. Finally, on the borders of late-modernity and post-modernity thesis depicts contemporary issues occurring in specialized literature.

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto práce je prezentovať zmeny vo vnímaní kontroly detstva z pohľadu rodiny, komunity a štátu v modernite, a zároveň načrtnúť ich smerovanie v post - modernite. Teoretická časť popisuje tak tradičné vnímanie konceptu dieťaťa ako aj novú paradigmu a s tým spojené vplyvy sociálnej kontroly naň. V analytickej časti sa autorka zameriava na analýzu textov zahraničných teoretikov, ich postoja, popisu, konceptualizácie danej otázky ako aj na vysvetlenie nepomeru kontroly. Dáva si za cieľ zistiť, či a do akej miery zastávala rodina primárnu funkciu kontroly detí a aký bol vývoj jej postavenia s ohľadom na sociálno-ekonomické zmeny v modernite. Celý obsah práce sa špecializuje na vývoj pomeru kontroly v krajinách západnej Európy najmä v prostredí Spojeného kráľovstva. Vo všeobecnosti prevažuje názor autorov na silnú pozíciu rodiny začiatkom 19.storočia, ktorá postupne slabne a ustupuje celospoločenským záujmom štátu. Obdobie 20.storočia reprezentuje nízka rodičovská kontrola a rozvoj štátnej kontroly všetkých oblastí života detí a rodiny. Prevaha štátnej kontroly nad rodinnou narastá v závislosti od liberalizácie práv detí a ich presadzovania sa v spoločnosti. Na prelome neskorej modernity a post - modernity práca poukazuje na súčasné témy rezonujúce v odbornej literatúre.
