Bird mortality as a result of the collisions with glass surfaces in the UJEP campus in Ústí nad Labem

Abstract:

Přiložená práce se zabývá identifikací rizikových míst, kde dochází k nárazům ptáků do prosklených ploch v části kampusu UJEP v Ústí nad Labem. Kolize ptáků s prosklenými plochami byly zjišťovány u pěti sledovaných budov kampusu UJEP, a to v období od ledna 2023 do ledna 2024. Za tímto účelem byli sledováni uhynulí jedinci v intervalu 1-3 dní a mapovány otisky ptačích těl nalezených na prosklených plochách sledovaných budov. V zájmovém území byla zmapována dřevinná vegetace, na jejímž základě a terénních šetřeních byly vymezeny rizikové části budov, kde dochází k zrcadlení zeleně. Za účelem zjištění možné míry predace uhynulých jedinců byl proveden experiment, a to formou nabídnutí jednodenních kuřat a následném sledování jejich odnosu po dobu 3 dnů. Výzkum byl doplněn dotazníkovým šetřením v rámci pracovníků a studentů 6 fakult univerzity. Během sledovaného období byli v zájmovém území nalezeni 4 uhynulí jedinci. Při kontrole všech prosklených ploch bylo nalezeno 51 otisků ptačích těl, z nichž většina se nacházela na severní stěně budovy CPTO a východní stěně rektorátu. Z dotazníkového šetření vyplynulo, že nejrizikovější jsou pro ptáky stěny CPTO. Provedený experiment nepotvrdil vyšší míru predace. Z exponovaných 15 jedinců kuřat byly predovány pouze 2 exempláře. Ke kolizím ptáků s prosklenými plochami dochází nejčastěji u stěn, které jsou situované v blízkosti dřevin a kde dochází k zrcadlení těchto dřevin na prosklených plochách. Pro vytipovaná riziková místa byly navrženy způsoby možného řešení

Abstract:

The attached thesis deals with the identification of risk areas where birds collide with glass surfaces in the part of the UJEP campus in Ústí nad Labem. Bird collisions with glazed surfaces were surveyed in five monitored buildings of the UJEP campus, between January 2023 and January 2024. For this purpose, dead birds were monitored at intervals of 1-3 days and bird body impressions found on glazed surfaces of the monitored buildings were mapped. The woody vegetation in the area of interest was mapped, and based on this and field surveys, the at-risk parts of the buildings where green vegetation mirroring occurs were identified. In order to determine the possible predation rate of the dead birds, an experiment was conducted by offering day-old chicks and then monitoring their laying for 3 days. The research was supplemented by a questionnaire survey among staff and students of 6 faculties of the university. During the study period, 4 dead birds were found in the area of interest. Inspection of all glazed areas revealed 51 bird body prints, most of which were located on the north wall of the CPTO building and the east wall of the Rector's Office. The questionnaire survey indicated that the CPTO walls were the most risky for birds. The experiment conducted did not confirm the higher predation rate. Of the 15 chicks exposed, only 2 specimens were predated. Bird collisions with glazed surfaces occur most often at walls that are located near woody plants and where these woody plants are mirrored on the glazed surfaces. Possible solutions have been proposed for the identified risk areas.
