Abstract:

Předmětem této disertační práce je vztah mezi životem a dílem anglo-irské autorky a filozofky, Iris Murdochové. Hlavním cílem práce je zjistit, jak propojení literatury a filozofie ovlivnilo vyobrazení vztahů moci v jejích románech. Práce analyzuje, jak důležitou roli hrála její zkušenost intelektuálního formování v mužském univerzitním prostředí Oxfordu a Cambridge v období let čtyřicátých až šedesátých a jak se tato skutečnost promítá do její tvorby. Práce si dále klade otázku, zdali Murdochová ignorovala genderovou a politickou otázku dané doby. Studium její osobní korespondence a rozhovorů dokumentují vývoj jejího charakteru a politických, filozofických a společenských myšlenek na pozadí druhé poloviny dvacátého století. Romány Murdochové odrážejí její morální filozofii a koncepty lásky, dobra a pozornosti, které jsou nedílnou součástí osobních vztahů v jejím narativu. I když autorka není feministickou spisovatelkou, její dílo odráží genderovou nerovnost a na svou dobu nekonvenční vnímání genderu jako proměnlivého (gender fluidity), dále vidí větší partnerskou spokojenost v polyamorních vztazích. Koncept tvoření vztahů moci v její fikci je odrazem autorčiny zkušenosti s životem v poválečné Anglii, prací s uprchlíky, ale také jejím působením v převážně mužské univerzitní společnosti. Neméně důležitou roli hrají její politické zájmy a vliv Eliase Canettiho a jeho teorie rozkazu a transformace.

Abstract:

This dissertation discusses the relation of the life and work of Anglo-Irish novelist and philosopher Iris Murdoch. Its main goal is to examine how literature and philosophy are interlocked or detached in the way power relations in her novels are fictionalized. It analyses how her personal experience in a predominantly male academic environment of Oxbridge is also portrayed and reflected in her work. Furthermore, it argues whether some of her critics are right or not in saying that she avoids gender topics as well as social and political ones. Her letters and interviews reveal how she changed and evolved her character and ideas during four decades along her creative and philosophical career. The letters also enable to track the development of her political and philosophical thoughts in the context of the second half of the 20th century. This work provides an insight into the moral philosophy that inhabits her novels. Her key philosophical concepts of love, goodness, and attention permeate personal relations in her narrative. Even though she was not a feminist writer her novels reflect gender inequalities, but she also proves to be ahead of time with the unconventional conception of gender as fluid and suggests happiness in polyamorous relationships. Murdoch’s power relationships are constructed based on her lived experience in post-war England, and her work with displaced people. However, her Oxbridge formation, political affiliation and Elias Canetti’s theory of command and transformation are equally fundamental.
