The relationship between the level of Enterprise Risk Management and subjective financial performance of non-financial SMEs in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Podnikatelský sektor zažil v posledním desetiletí dvě velké hospodářské krize. Velká recese na přelomu prvního a druhého desetiletí 21. století měla převážně finanční charakter. V této finanční krizi (2008-2015) se explicitně projevily limitace v dosavadním přístupu řízení rizik. Krize také zvýraznila neúčinnost stávajících systémů a akcelerovala významnost integrace řízení rizik. Současná krize je způsobena pandemií SARS-CoV-2 a válkou na Ukrajině. Krize výrazně ovlivnila každodenní život lidí v celé společnosti. Mnoho společností reaguje na krizi zavedením systému řízení rizik, který má zmírnit dopady na jejich strategické cíle. Otázkou je, do jaké míry a jak má implementace Enterprise Risk Managementu pozitivní vliv na výkonnost v malých a středních podnicích. Disertační práce se zaměřuje na zvyšující se potřebu zkoumání efektu a významu Enterprise risk managementu v malých a středních podnicích. Na jednu strany jsou malé a střední podniky nuceny holisticky řídit rizika pro zachování či zvýšení výkonnosti podniku a současně na druhou stranu nejsou přímo regulovány konkrétními institucemi. Existuje předpoklad, že Enterprise risk management ovlivňuje výkonnost podniku nepřímo prostřednictvím zprostředkovatelů. Kvantifikování mediátorů a vyhodnocení efektu implementace Enterprise risk managementu na výkonnost podniku je předmětem disertační práce. Práce využívá primární data malých a středních podniků z České republiky(n=296). Použitými metodami jsou analýza latentních tříd a strukturální modelování rovnic. Výsledky ukazují pozitivní působení Enterprise risk managementu na finanční výkonnost podniku, dále pozitivní působení zahraničního kapitálu a velikosti firmy na implementaci Enterprise risk managementu. Na druhou stranu stáří podniku nepřímo úměrně ovlivňuje implementaci. Organizační kultura – dimenze mise je katalyzátorem vztahu mezi Enterprise risk management a finanční výkonností podniku. Výstupy výzkumu akcentují důležitost řízení rizik v nefinančních malých a středních podnicích. Z manažerského pohledu disertační práce přispívá k pochopení konceptu ERM v prostředí nefinančních MSP.

Abstract:

The business sector has experienced two major economic crises in the last decade. The Great Recession at the turn of the first and second decade of the 21st century was predominantly financial in nature. In this financial crisis (2008-2015), the limitations of the existing risk management approach became explicit. The crisis also highlighted the inefficiency of existing systems and accelerated the importance of risk management integration. The current crisis is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. The crisis has significantly affected the daily lives of people throughout society. Many companies are responding to the crisis by implementing a risk management system to mitigate the impact on their strategic objectives. The question is to what extent and how the implementation of Enterprise Risk Management has a positive impact on performance in small and medium-sized enterprises. This dissertation focuses on the increasing need to investigate the effect and importance of Enterprise Risk Management in small and medium-sized enterprises. On the one hand, small and medium-sized enterprises are forced to manage risks holistically to maintain or enhance enterprise performance, while on the other hand they are not directly regulated by specific institutions. There is an understanding that Enterprise risk management affects the performance of the enterprise indirectly through intermediaries The subject of the dissertation is to quantify the mediators and evaluate the effect of Enterprise Risk Management implementation on firm performance. The thesis uses primary data of SMEs from the Czech Republic (n=296). The methods used are latent class analysis and structural equation modelling. The results show a positive effect of Enterprise Risk Management on firm financial performance, as well as a positive effect of foreign capital and firm size on the implementation of Enterprise Risk Management. On the other hand, firm age inversely affects implementation. Organizational culture - mission dimension is the catalyst for the relationship between Enterprise risk management and financial firm performance. The research findings highlight the importance of risk management in non-financial SMEs. From a managerial perspective, the dissertation contributes to the understanding of the ERM concept in the non-financial small and medium-sized enterprises environment.
