The Suzhou Topolect and Its Use by Young Native Speakers

Abstract:

Táto práca predstavuje Suzhouský dialekt (Sūzhōuhuà 苏州话) ako súčasť Čínskej dialektickej skupiny Wúyǔ (吴语). Pred zaoberaním sa samotným dialektom, je však potrebné vysvetliť kontext, v ktorom sa nachádza. Preto sa v prvom rade za účelom porozumenia problematike s klasifikáciou Čínskej jazykovej vetvy, práca na začiatku zaoberá uvedením do aktuálnych otázok terminológie Čínštiny a jej dialektov fāngyán (方言). Pre čo najlepšie zoznámenie čitateľa s témou, je teda výklad daný do kontextu nie len lingvistického ale aj sociohistorického. Následne je pomocou vykonaného terénneho výskumu ponúknutý náhľad do sociolingvistického prostredia Sūzhōu. Výskum bol vypracovaný kvantitatívnou metódou – formou dotazníka distribuovaného mladým ľuďom, ktorých materinský jazyk je práve Suzhouský dialekt. Výsledky poukazujú na súčasný stav dialektu v danej sociálnej skupine.

Abstract:

This thesis introduces the Sūzhōu dialect (Sūzhōuhuà 苏州话) as a part of the Chinese Wúyǔ (吴语) dialect group. Before taking on the dialect itself, however, it is necessary to examine the environment in which it has been for developing. Therefore, in order to truly understand the issues behind classification of Sinitic languages, we first concern ourselves with presenting the contemporary terminology questions concerning the varieties of Chinese - fāngyán (方言). For the readers’ sake, the explanation is given in not only in the context of linguistics but also in the sociohistorical context. Afterwards, we examine the sociolinguistic environment of Sūzhōu using the results of the conducted research. The research was conducted utilizing the quantitative method – in the form of a short questionnaire distributed to young people, whose mother tongue is the Sūzhōu dialect. Results of the research reveal details about the current status of the dialect in the given social group.
