The influence of religion on the economic situation of households

Abstract:

Touto diplomovou prací je řešena otázka, zda má náboženství vliv na špatnou ekonomickou situaci domácností. Jedním z důvodů k volbě tohoto tématu je nepopiratelný vztah ekonomie a náboženství. Vzhledem k různorodosti pravidel jednotlivých náboženství bylo zvoleno pouze jedno zkoumané náboženství, a to islám a současně pouze jedna arabská země, tj. Alžírsko, protože by bylo příliš komplikované získat dostatečný vzorek z každé arabské země. Další důvod ke zkoumání tohoto námětu je jeho aktuálnost, protože silné vlny ekonomických muslimských migrantů často otevírají mnoho otázek spojených s touto pro Evropany exotickou vírou. Uskutečněné dotazníkové šetření proběhlo v Alžírsku v arabském jazyce a současně bylo provedeno zcela stejné dotazníkové šetření v Česku. Takto vznikly tři skupiny: alžírští muslimové, čeští křesťané a lidé bez vyznání. Odpovědi těchto tří skupin byly mezi sebou porovnávány pomocí statistických testů. Odpovědi jednotlivých muslimů a křesťanů poskytují dostatečná data pro vyhodnocení a ověření cíle této práce. Odpověď na položenou výzkumnou otázku zní, že víra, resp. islám má přímý vliv na ekonomické rozhodování muslimů a současně jsou pozorovány významné rozdíly v českém a alžírském bankovním systému i v sociálně hodnotové orientaci.

Abstract:

This master´s thesis deals with the question of whether religion influences the poor economic situation of households. One of the reasons for choosing this topic is the undeniable relationship between economics and religion. Due to the diversity of the rules of individual religions, only one researched religion was chosen, namely Islam, and at the same time only one Arab country i.e., Algeria, because it would be too complicated to get a sufficient sample from each Arab country. Another reason to explore this subject is its topicality, as strong waves of economic Muslim migrants often open many questions associated with this exotic faith (for Europeans). The questionnaire survey was carried out in Algeria in the Arabic language, and at the same time a completely identical questionnaire survey was carried out in the Czech Republic. This is how the following three groups were formed: Algerian Muslims, Czech Christians, and people of no religion. The responses of the three groups were compared with each other using statistical tests. The responses of individual Muslims and Christians provide sufficient data to evaluate and verify the goal of this thesis. The answer to the posed research question is that faith, better said Islam, has a direct influence on the economic decisions of Muslims, and at the same time significant differences are observed in the Czech and Algerian banking systems as well as in social value orientation.
