The specifics of public museums of fine art and their role in the process of communication with the public: An outline of the situation in the Czech Republic and its comparison with Austrian and German environments

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá specifiky veřejných muzeí umění, jejich transformací a rolí ve společnosti, přičemž porovnává aktuální vývoj v České republice se situací v německém a rakouském prostředí. Proces přeměny uměleckých institucí od uzavřených „chrámů“ k otevřeným centrům setkávání a diskuse je nahlížen z několika úhlů – z pohledu měnících se potřeb současné společnosti, kulturní politiky, historického vývoje, managementu a hlavních úloh muzea umění. Podrobněji je zpracováno téma muzejní pedagogiky a dvou na ni navazujících fenoménů: artoték (půjčoven obrazů) a metodických kulturně-pedagogických center. Tyto dvě instituce autorka chápe jako důležité články v procesu demokratizace a zprostředkování umění. Druhá část práce shrnuje dosavadní výsledky autorčina empirického výzkumu realizovaného dvěma metodami kvalitativního výzkumu. Případovými studiemi ve třech exemplárních muzeích v Rakousku, Německu a České republice a polostrukturovanými rozhovory s odborníky v oblasti muzejního managementu, muzejní pedagogiky a kunsthistorie. V návaznosti na výsledky výzkumu uzavírá práci zamyšlení nad možným fungováním dvou veřejných kulturně-vzdělávacích subjektů (artotéky a muzejně-pedagogického centra) ve zvolené lokalitě – městě Brně.

Abstract:

This dissertation addresses the specifics of public museums of fine arts, their transformations and their role in the society. It compares current development of public museums in the Czech Republic with the development in Austria and Germany. It further describes the process of transformation of art institutions from inaccessible “temples” towards centres open to the public from various points of view: i) from the perspective of changing demands of present-day society, ii) cultural politics, iii) historical progress, iv) management, and v) main roles of fine art museums. In greater detail, the study elaborates on museum pedagogy and two other related phenomena: i) artotheks (i.e. picture rentals), and ii) methodical cultural pedagogy centres. The author emphasizes these two phenomena for their importance in the process of democratisation and mediation of art. The second part of the dissertation summarizes results of the author’s empirical qualitative research: case studies in three exemplary museums in Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic, and semi-structured interviews with experts in cultural management, museum management and the history of art. In relation to the research results the study has been concluded by contemplating possible co existence of two public cultural educational subjects (artotheks and methodical cultural pedagogy centre) in Brno the selected locality.
