Reflection of transience and impermanence through the optics of photographic media

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis seeks to address issues related to the relationship between the medium of photography and the image itself, reflecting the volatility, transience or transparency and seeks to achieve this through the concept of imediacy and its application in photography. Imediacy, as a form of visual presentation will be understood through the theory of Bolter and Grusin, according to which the medium itself becomes transparent and the recipient perceives only display objects. We will focus on this transparency through optics of the theory of new media over categories of transparency and immediacy of the experience of the displayed object. In case of transparency and emotional response to photographed image the photography will be analyzed over two Barthes`s terms that are influencing her: studium, as a general interest, and punktum, as a personal testimony or coincidence that strikes the viewer directly. The method of content analysis of raised concepts as well as the method of illustration supported by particular examples will be used in case of Douglas Crimp, who in the present context analyzes the theme of death and AIDS phenomenon. Image transformation into a character or metaphor is raised by Susan Sontag, for whom the photograph becomes an extension of reality of the photographed object and thus the fingerprint or interpretation of reality itself. She is questioning the image as a recycling of the reality and photography as a means to dominate the subject photographed. Bachelor thesis seeks to approximate and analyze the raised concepts in the tradition of visual motifs and provide a theoretical discourse over the issues raised aas well as to offer concrete examples from artistic and cultural practices that would serve to visualize the topic.

Abstract:

Bakalárska diplomová práca sa snaží nastoliť problém vzťahu média fotografie k obrazom samotným, zobrazujúcim prchavosť, pominuteľnosť či priehľadnosť skrz koncept imediácie a jeho uplatnenie vo fotografii. Imediácia, ako forma vizuálnej prezentácie, bude chápaná pomocou teórie Grusina a Boltera, na základe ktorej sa médium ako také stáva priesvitným a recipient vníma len zobrazované predmety. Optikou teórie nových médií sa zameriame na túto priehľadnosť cez kategórie transparentnosti či bezprostrednosti zážitku zo zobrazovaného predmetu. V prípade transparentnosti a emocionálnej reakcie na fotografovaný obraz zanalyzujeme fotografiu cez dva Barthesove pojmy na ňu pôsobiace: studium, ako všeobecný záujem, a punktum, ako osobné svedectvo či náhodu, ktorá zasahuje diváka priamo. Metódu obsahovej analýzy nastolených pojmov ako aj metódu ilustrácie pomocou konkrétnych príkladov použijeme v prípade Douglasa Crimpa, ktorý v danom kontexte tematizuje umieranie a fenomén AIDS. Transformáciu fotografie v znak alebo metaforu nastoľuje Susan Sontagová, podľa ktorej sa fotografia stáva predĺžením reality fotografovaného objektu a tým teda otiskom alebo interpretáciou reality samotnej. Problematizuje tu obraz ako recykláciu skutočnosti a fotografiu ako prostriedok k ovládnutiu fotografovaného objektu. Práca má priblížiť a zanalyzovať dané pojmy v tradícii vizuálnych motívov a poskytnúť teoretický diskurz nad nastolenými otázkami ako aj ponúknuť konkrétne príklady z umeleckej a kultúrnej praxe, ktoré poslúžia k vizualizácii danej témy.
