Peter Pan and the child in childrens' literature

Abstract:

Na úplném začátku bylo záměrem této práce porovnat knihu Petr Pan s dětskou literaturou konce osmnáctého a devatenáctého století. Avšak čím více času a čtení bylo této práci věnováno, začalo být více a více zřejmé, že kniha Petr Pan stojí v literatuře na dvou místech zároveň - v žánru dětské literatury a ve fantazii dětství pro dospělé. Proto se tedy tato bakalářská práce zabývá otázkou, zda je Petr Pan dětská kniha nebo zda jde pouze o autorovu dobře maskovanou fantazii dětství, která se zapůjčuje žánru dětské literatury. Díky této otázce je v této práci přehled faktorů, které zapříčinily vývoj dětské literatury na konci osmnáctého a devatenáctého století. Dále je zde uveden přehled toho, jak bylo na dítě nahlíženo před a během nárůstu dětské literatury. Jako další jsou popsány různé žánry této literatury, v pořadí v jakém se objevily. S těmi je poté porovnán Petr Pan, který je následně přirovnán k tradicím a zvykům tehdejší dětské literatury. V závěru práce je zhodnoceno, zda autor knihy J. M. Barrie tyto tradice reflektuje, pozměňuje a/nebo se od nich odvrací.

Abstract:

At first, this bachelor thesis started out as a comparison of Peter Pan and children’s literature of the late eighteenth and nineteenth century. However, the more research and time that has been put into this paper, it became more and more clear that the text of Peter Pan stands in two places at once - children’s literature and fantasy of childhood for adults. Therefore, this bachelor thesis deals with the question of whether Peter Pan is children’s literature, or whether it is only a well-masked fantasy of childhood that appears to fit well into the children’s literature genre. To this end, there is an overview of the factors behind the growth of children’s literature in the late eighteenth and nineteenth century, as well as an overview of how the child was perceived before and during this process. Different genres are also discussed, in chronological order of their emergence, as well as the conventions and traditions of children’s literature, and Peter Pan is then related to these. Finally, we explore the question of whether the author, J. M. Barrie, reflects, adapts, and/or departs from these.
