Effect of species mixture on growth dynamics of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in national park Alto Tajo, Spain.

Abstract:

Nejen díky častým kalamitám v jehličnatých monokulturách během minulých 150 let se nyní vědecká společnost soustředí na výzkum smíšených porostů Vzhledem ke komplexnosti problematiky a pro získání obecných závěrů je potřeba mít velké množství dílčích studií. Tato práce je zaměřena na růst borovice lesní (Pinus sylvestris L.) v monokulturách a směsích v severní oblasti regionu Castilla-La Mancha ve Španělsku. Borovice lesní je jednou z hlavních hospodářských dřevin napříč celou Evropou, díky svému rozlehlému areálu má velkou populační a genetickou rozmanitost. Každá populace má svá specifika a díky této rozmanitosti se může borovice vyskytovat na mnoha stanovištích. Je proto důležité jednotlivé genetické varianty studovat a také chránit, aby díky této rozmanitosti mohly v klimatické změně jednotlivé druhy obstát. Genetický materiál, který je odolný sušším a teplejším oblastem, pomůže zaplnit místa po jiných ustupujících dřevinách. V této studii měřením teploty, vlhkosti půdy a změn objemu kmene byly během let 2018, 2019 a 2020 získána data z 13 ploch z vysokohorské semiaridní oblasti Španělska. V těchto místech roste borovice lesní v monokulturách nebo směsích s duby (Quercus ilex L., Q. faginea Lam.) a borovicí černou (Pinus nigra Arn.). Celoevropské sucho v roce 2018 se projevilo také na vyšší teplotě a výrazně suchém období ve Španělsku. V této práci byly ale naměřeny ještě extrémnější podmínky v roce 2019. Stres suchem v obou letech neměl vliv na průměrný radiální přírůst, i když byly borovice průměrně více stresovány. I přesto, že stresem v letním období více trpěly borovice ve směsích, jejich přírůst byl dvojnásobný oproti monokulturám. Míra sucha, která byla v předcházejícím roce, se více projevila na stresu v roce následujícím. Tato práce dokládá pozitivní vliv mezidruhového smíšení na přírůst borovice na dané lokalitě, ale zároveň poukazuje na vetší ohrožení borovice nedostatkem vody v letních měsících ve smíšených porostech.

Abstract:

Due to calamities in monocultures over the 150 years, scientists are focusing on admixed-forest research. However, for the general accomplishment, it is necessary to have enough differently mixed stands with different ratios and species in a wide range of habitat conditions. Nevertheless, such a large goal is based on partial studies. This work is focused on Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in monocultures and mixed stands in the northern region of Castilla la Mancha in Spain. Pine is one of the main tree species across Europe, thanks to its large area has many populations and genetic diversity. Each population has its specifics and thanks to this diversity, pine can be found in many habitats. Therefore, it is important to study and protect individual genetic variants. Thanks to this diversity, individual species can get by climate change. Dry and warm-resistant genetic material will help fill places after receding trees. In this study, by measuring temperature, soil moisture, and radial volume changes were obtained data from 13 areas from 2018 to 2020. In this alpine semiarid region of Spain, Scots pine grows in monocultures or mixtures with oaks (Quercus ilex L., Q. faginea Lam.) and black pine (Pinus nigra L.). The year 2018 hit the Europe heatwave but in Spain the year 2019 was even warmer. Drought stress has not been shown to have a direct effect on radial growth. Even though pine suffered more from the summer stress in mixtures, the growth was double compared to monocultures. The level of drought that had occurred in the previous year had a greater effect on stress the following year. These facts point to interspecies mixing as a positive phenomenon, not least due to better use of resources and improved leaf reclamation.
