Global Terrorist Organizations: Comparison of Al-Qaeda and Islamic State

Abstract:

Tato práce představuje komplexní srovnání Al-Káidy a její odnože Fronty An Nusra s IS. Práce komparuje zdroje, využití médií a sociálních sítí, popravu rukojmí a společné historické a ideologické základy. Pro analýzu byla vybrána Teorie racionálního volby, protože je použitelná pro nestátní aktéry, jako jsou Al-Káida a IS. Tato teorie předpokládá, že teroristé nebo alespoň vůdci teroristických organizací jednají racionálně. Chtějí dosáhnout konkrétních politických cílů a přesně počítají zdroje, které mají k dispozici. Výsledky studie dokazují, že obě výše zmíněné teroristické organizace jednají racionálně a mají politické cíle. Metoda rozdílu, popsaná v kapitole 1.3, se používá při porovnávání různých bodů, které dvě nebo více organizací mají, nebo nemají společné. Předpokládá, že rozdílných znaků je méně než těch společných. Al Kaida a IS mají mnoho společného. Ve skutečnosti IS podléhal velení Al-Káidy až do roku 2014, kdy se Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi rozešel s Al Kaidou. Obě teroristické organizace jsou sunnitské a mají mnoho společných nepřátel. IS se snažil bránit své území v Sýrii a v Iráku, zatímco Al Kaida nikdy své vlastní území neměla. Přesto i mezi cíle Al Kaidy patřilo vytvoření islámského státu. Al-Káida se však nikdy nepokusila o jeho založení. Studium teroristických organizací představuje jeden z hlavních bezpečnostních problémů, jimž západní státy čelí. Hlavním problémem při konfrontaci s nestátními aktéry, jako jsou teroristické organizace, je úplné jejich úplné zničení. Porážka teroristické organizace a její vytlačení do okolních států nemusí nutně znamenat konec jejích aktivit, jak dokazuje například organizace Taliban v Afghánistánu.

Abstract:

This thesis represents a complex comparison of Al-Qaeda and its affiliate An-Nusra Front with ISIS. It considers resources, the use of media and social networks, the execution of hostages, and common historical and ideological bases. The theory of rational choice is best suited for the analysis because it is applicable to non-state actors, such as Al-Qaeda and ISIS. This theory assumes that terrorists or at least the leaders of terrorist organizations act rationally. They wish to achieve specific political goals and consider the resources that are available to them. The results of the study prove that both above-mentioned terrorist organizations act rationally and that they both have political targets. The method of difference, described in chapter 1.3, applies when comparing various points that two or more organizations have or do not have in common. It presumes that there are fewer differences than there are commonalities. Al-Qaeda and ISIS have much in common. In fact, ISIS fell under Al-Qaeda command untill 2014, when Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi broke with Al-Qaeda. Both terrorist organizations are Sunni, and they have many common enemies. ISIS struggled to defend its territory in Syria and Iraq, while Al-Qaeda never had its own territory, even though the organization's aims included the establishment of an Islamic state. Al-Qaeda, however, never attempted to establish one. The study of terrorist organizations is one of the main security issues facing Western states. A major concern is the difficulty in confronting non-state actors, such as terrorist organizations, the total destruction of which can be daunting. The defeat of a terrorist organization and its expulsion into nearby states does not necessarily mean the end of its activities, as the Taliban in Afghanistan demonstrates.
