Concept of Baumol disease

Abstract:

Práce se věnuje problematice Baumolovy nákladové choroby a mechanismu nevyváženého růstu, přičemž výzkumnou otázkou je hodnocení významu těchto jevů pro veřejnou ekonomii. Základním teoretickým východiskem práce je literární rešerše relevantních publikací. Hodnocení významu Baumolovy choroby pro veřejnou ekonomii je dále vedeno v kontextu případových studií na makroekonomické i mikroekonomické úrovni. Důraz je kladen zejména na vztah mezi problematikou a změnami hrubého reálného disponibilního důchodu domácností. Ze syntézy literární rešerše a závěrů případových studií vyplývá pouze omezená platnost předpokladů Baumolovy choroby. V souvislosti s veřejnou ekonomií je poukázáno na význam cenové elasticity poptávky pro produkci a jsou nastíněny teoretické obrysy pro případné intervence ze strany státu.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the issues of the Baumol's cost disease and the unbalanced growth mechanism, where the research question is the evaluation of this phenomenon’s meaning for the public economics. The basic theoretical starting point of this thesis is a literary review of relevant publications. The evaluation of the meaning of the Baumol's disease for the public economics is further examined in a context of case studies on both microeconomic and macroeconomics levels of research. The emphasis is placed especially on the relation between the problems and the changes in the real gross disposable income of households. Only a limited validity of the assumptions concerning the Baumol's disease results from the literary review and the case studies’ conclusions. The price elasticity demand of a production is pointed out in accordance with the public economics and the theoretical outlines in case of the state’s potential interventions are indicated.
